Googly-eyed Glass squid (Teuothowenia pellucida) displaying "balling" behaviour. It retracts its arms and tentacles inside its mantle as a defence mechanism when it is disturbed or alarmed.

There are around 60 species of Glass squid, with the name deriving from the transparent nature of most of these. They occur in surface to midwater depths in most oceans, spending most time in partially sunlit shallow waters where their transparency provides camouflage. Another defining characteristic are their swollen bodies and short arms, which bear two rows of suckers or hooks.
