Just saw someone say, under a video critisising people who villify flawed female characters, go on about how they shouldn’t even be called flaws, and how they’re just girls who can get what they want, and how “noone calls the men out for anything”. First of all, way to miss the point so utterly completely. Second, a flaw is a flaw regardless of gender. To let them all go equally unaddressed is pure bullshit, and exactly how you get people, who look at cautionary tales and call them “bad writing, because they could’ve done x and x”. Yeah, no fucking SHIT Tracy, THAT’S WHY IT’S MARKETED AS FICTION, NOT A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR REAL LIFE Third, you’re LITERALLY part of the problem you’re (I’m assuming) trying to fight against in the first place. You’re JUST as afraid of making women who are imperfect and wrong, and I am sick and TIRED of people confusing catering morality and reality to a character’s whims for empowerment. LET WOMEN BE WRONG. LET YOUR FEMALE CHARACTER BE SELFISH, EMOTIONAL, MAKE BAD DECISIONS, LET THEM BE HUMAN FOR FUCK’S SAKE, AND LET THEM EXPECIENCE THE CONSEQUENCES OF IT TOO. You don’t have to glorify all-consuming anger or hatred, or even just impulsivity, in order to let it exist in a woman. Just like you can call reactions valid and understandable without calling it the right course of action. For fuck’s goddamned sake. When making a character, you’re trying to write a person, write a LIFE, and part of that is something called “personal growth”, WHICH YOU CAN’T GET IF THERE’S NOWHERE TO GROW. Even if you don’t intend to have her grow as a person through your story, (which is fine and could be executed wonderfully, if done right), you still can’t just have a female character who never does or has done anything wrong ever (according to the standards of the story), and expect it to be treated as some pinacle of feminism. Same goes for if you’re just a fan interacting with pre-existing media. YOU CAN AKNOWLEDGE FLAWS IN CHARACTERS YOU LIKE. PLEASE. I’M LITERALLY BEGGING YOU ATP.

So recently I’ve been thinking seriously about how to make my Twitter more ‘healthy’ as a writing Twitter, and it’s really hard thinking of content people want to see. It’s partly because it always feels really awful just putting up my own chapters, or letting people know I’ve posted, or putting up excerpts. Marketing doesn’t come natural to me, even just ‘neutrally sharing stuff I’ve done’ feels really counter-intuitive.
But I’m also getting closer and closer to a point where the government may decide to take away my Disability Pension (because they’re a Trump-lite government, and my many illnesses are largely invisible, and recently they’ve not been giving it to people with stage 4 cancer), so I live with this constant fear that like...I would like to get a little better at marketing. Just in case.
This all sounds dire, but I’m actually curious to learn more about ways that market that will suit me as a person. Like Tumblr suits me. It doesn’t feel like marketing actually. It just feels like hanging out, and sometimes I mention things I’ve done and tell you all why I’m excited about it, and you call block the tags I use in case you don’t want to see certain things (like all my ask posts, lmao, or everything to do with fae tales so folks can still get the memes etc.) And I feel like I could find this for Twitter! But I don’t know what it’ll involve yet.
But I’ve been having a lot of thoughts like that lately because I have a book coming out. And it’s one of those books that’s impossible to market (ace representation is great for me as an ace person, and great for ace people, but boy is it hard to market in shifter universes), and I’m like ‘wow I have so much to learn about this’ but also I would’ve written that book anyway :D :D
