Do you think Smoke was actually just wanted to die at the end of Sinners? I don’t think he wanted to live, clearly, as he made no plans to protect himself from the Klan bullets. But I wonder about his exact motives for the shootout going down the way it did.
As far as Smoke knew, Sammy had left already and was as safe as he could be back with his preacher daddy, and (hopefully) giving up his guitar. But Stack was definitely still inside the building. Was it to protect his brother one last time? Was it to punish himself for not protecting his brother, Annie, his child? Was it to join Annie and his child? Was it to take out the last bits of anger at a dream deferred? Was it because he was a soldier and soldiers fight and die in battle?
