Doing a dance video together hadn’t even felt like a good idea at the time, but now she knew how bad of an idea it actually was.

Ivy shot him one of those looks. Jake had been on the receiving end of a lot of those looks since the breakup, and it didn’t really seem like she planned on relenting anytime soon. Every time he said something that felt like something he would say as her boyfriend, she felt this pang in her heart at the fact that he definitely wasn’t her boyfriend. Granted, it was basically guaranteed that he would be again, but that didn’t make her any less impatient for that day to arrive, and being reminded of the whole ‘just friends’ thing wasn’t something she liked.

She considered giving him a smartass answer if only to put him in his place and remind him that he didn’t get to say things like that anymore, things that had obvious meaning behind them beyond their label of just being friends. She could tell him she had a whole list of places she’d rather be, people she’d rather be with, but he’d catch her in that lie so fast she doubted she’d even get to tell it.

Truthfully, his question had some basis, because there really wasn’t anywhere else she’d rather be. She knew she was a little unfocused, if only to keep her mind off of any moments his skin brushed hers as they choreographed and rehearsed, and she knew he still wasn’t happy about her choice of places to stay while she was in the city.

He was a pain in the ass, grumpy at the moment, and still, dancing with him was exactly where she wanted to be, and nothing else seemed like an option. But she couldn’t tell him that.

“Don’t make excuses because you can’t keep up with me, Puckerman. Now let’s run it again.”
