surf report - 10.29.11 - Batten Down the Hatches!
There are not many hours left in the day before conditions in our area begin to seriously deteriorate. The approaching weather system will quickly intensify as its center traverses close to the Vineyard overnight and then really begins to rage as it moves off Nova Scotia. Mid latitude cyclones such as this one, including the two that blew up over the North Atlantic this past week, have huge wind fields and Hurricane force winds. Hence their impact is far reaching, much more so than hurricanes. Northeasterly gales and drenching rains will usher in this storm late today into the evening. As the storm heads off to the NE, winds on the backside will turn more northerly & then NW. This will pull in colder air and snow for us all. As the system begins it's pressure deepening "bombing out" process off of Nova Scotia, NW winds on the back side of the cyclone could hit 70mph or more tomorrow AM. Gale force winds, rain saturated ground, trees with leaves and 6 or more inches of heavy wet snow can make for many downed trees & power outages.
Relative to surf on Sunday, a large E/NE wind wave will affect our shores from Portland on down through the Cape with the Northeasterly component of the swell penetrating deep into the western areas of Cape Cod Bay. This wave will be overhead tomorrow AM, but gusting NW winds will make drops, and simply sitting upright in the line up, quite challenging. Monday morning ought to be a bit more civilized with knee to waist high left overs out of the E/SE and moderate NW winds.
The 4th cyclone in this series is currently forecast to track offshore more towards Bermuda, stall and spin itself out during the course of next week. This might offer us a number of days (mid to late week) with knee to head high surf and mild autumn temps.
Hang tight, then Hang Ten!
