Notorious (2016) [included with Amazon Prime] Character: Megan Byrd, the #2 producer at the biggest news show in the country What it’s about: The intersection of the media and the legal world and how the news gets made Why you should watch it: The show is exciting and shows you an almost unbelievable behind-the-scenes of how events become news. According to Sepi in this podcast, a scene where Megan kisses another woman is cut out of the last episode—so although she reads straight on the show, at least we know otherwise.

The Deuce (2017–2019) [HBO, available on HBO GO with cable login if you get HBO] Character: Loretta, a sex worker What it’s about: Sex work in New York in the 1970s and 80s. It tracks the corruption, gender and race dynamics, and the exploitation that marked this period of widespread prostitution and the beginnings of a new era for pornography, as well as the grassroots movements to decriminalize sex work. Why you should watch it: This show made me think—a lot. I didn’t love all the characters or storylines, but I truly believe that we have to confront difficult topics, not ignore them, and this show makes you think a lot about sex work, pornography, and prostitution. There will be moments from the show that stick with you—whether it be the cold potato soup or the bruises or the clothes or the egg rolls with the cops. It was hard to watch at times but I came away from it having had a sophisticated confrontation with very morally problematic events in our history. And as a cherry on top, Loretta is remarkably strong and has a shining spirit, and her character becomes more important as the seasons go on.

Falling Water: Season 2 (2018) [included with Amazon Prime] Character: Alexis (Alex) Simms, a homicide detective What it’s about: In this science fiction show, certain people known as “dreamers” can invade others’ dreams. One dreamer begins using his power to compel people to kill others—or themselves—in their dreams. Why you should watch it: Science fiction isn’t my thing, but a few episodes in, this show completely got me, and I watched the last six episodes in less than 24 hours. Alex is my dream girl—loyal, hard working, strong-willed, yet soft and loving. Alex and her lawyer girlfriend of five years, Christy, are the absolute cutest couple and made my entire life. It’s an interesting story, but will admit that the finale ended more like a season finale, and is a bit disappointing as a series finale. If for no other reason, I suggest watching so that I have people to fangirl over the perfection that is Alex / Christy.

The L Word: Generation Q (2019–?) [Showtime] Character: Gigi Ghorbani, a real estate agent What it’s about: Y’all know. A bunch of queer folk living in LA. Why you should watch it: I’m sure this show is why anyone is reading this post in the first place, so I’ll keep it short and sweet: a more diverse representation of queer people, the broad array of queer experiences, and the existence of the Alice / Gigi / Nat throuple. I love Gigi because she’s flawed and hurting yet also honest, caring, and “have you seen her?” Gigi could probably have chemistry with a paper bag. Plus, “what are we nailing?”
