I want to say Happy Valentines Day to notsoshynurse. Marie is just a beautiful person, inside and out. She has an incredibly huge heart and always puts everyone else's needs before her own. I just love her!

Dear Tumblr nurses (or anyone who's had this happen) Last night, I had an IV infiltrate resulting in a lump of subq saline. I put ice packs on it after it happened, and heat packs on it throughout the day, but it's still every bit as red, hot, swollen, and tender as it was last night. Is there anything else that would help speed reabsorption? I have surgery Monday, so they've stopped all aspirin in advance of that. Asking for the Vicodin they've prescribed for me for foot pain seems like overkill, but I'm pretty much there. I would ask the nurse here, but she is the most unprofessional person I've ever met (to the point that the nurse manager or charge nurse or whatever her title is and I will be having a discussion about it tomorrow) and she's really not interested in helping me. (My apologies in advance if I miss tagging you; it's been a long night.) Thanks.

It is frustrating

My company, the owners of I think 17 or 19 hospitals in the area have made a new policy to make you worry about your job even more. 

I see you on your don't do anything wrong ever or ever be late or sick policy or we write you up. 

They just changed their point system.  You get around 10 points over 2 years and then they can fire you.  Your points can be either from tardiness, mistakes, or sickness----(wait, sickness---how do they do that?)

You get one point against you for mischarting, which you know happens every fucking day.  There is no way to chart EVERYTHING that is possible, let alone every little part of everything little thing.  So you miss charting that you education about the drug/food reactions of the current anticoagulant medication the person was on.  (oh---and if we don't chart the education along with a few other tabs just perfectly lined up---it doesn't count)  So a simple thing like that---you can lose a point.

There is also you don't look professional enough or any other thing they feel they can write you up for. 

Oh, traffic was backed up and you were 30 seconds late?  You lose half a point for any tardiness---yes, even by seconds----you lose points.

You are sick and not hospitalized and don't have a pre-approved FMLA for that pink eye or whatever other illness.  You lose one point for not being at work, if you are not hospitalized, even if you staying at home is keeping you and your coworkers safer.  Who cares you are puking, have a contagious disease?  A doctor's note no longer is acceptable for missing work.  If you are sick, points against you. Oh, and you know your kids can never have any life events or sickness happening. 

If you are late or sick on the weekend----points against you double. 

They just instituted this new policy and then tried to back date it over a year ago to fire more people.  That didn't fly well.  They quickly changed the policy to starting now.  

And yes, you are very right about not leaving any time for the nurse to ever have any kind of interaction with the patient, without it causing so much more problems in the day with everything that is going on.  How dare we try and actually communicate and nurture and comfort those we are caring for?  Give support, a shoulder to cry on, help someone smile or just be there for them.  How dare that be a priority of the actual healing process?

Oh there is so much to be bothered with on all this.  I don't know if this will stay, but I definitely needed to vent.
