Playing Indian & Other Racist Nonsense

From long before there has been a US of A, there has been plenty of stereotypical and racist concepts about Native American cultures made and perpetuated by non-Natives. Scalping, 'off the reservation', 'Indian giver', wearing headdresses at festivals, skull in a headdress images, having a 'great great great grandma who's Cherokee' and hypersexualized costumes are the tip of the iceberg. The music industries of the West and Japan have been complicit in promoting that negativity. It's time to stop and evaluate what is appropriate and why positive representation is necessary. Learn about examples of appropriation in the industry and how 'but I'm part Native' is not a pass. If you've ever thought of, created, or promoted anything remotely 'Native themed', this panel is for you.

Ali Watson of NTVTWT.com and A Tribe Called Geek founder Johnnie Jae have submitted a SXSW Panel Picker proposal for the 2019 SXSW conference. The topic is “Playing Indian and Other Racist Nonsense“.

With this panel, they propose to address the harm of trends such as Pretendian-ism, or the act of pretending to be Indigenous, such as claiming to be Cherokee or Apache, and how this erases the voices of actual Natives trying to address important topics that affect our communities. It will also address other elements, such as the tired tradition of non-Natives wearing headdresses on the absurd claim that this offensive act somehow ‘honors’ our culture, or treating it as little more than a costume. If selected, they will have a one hour panel to discuss our topics, which is why it’s focused on music and entertainment at the moment. These are the largest culprits of cultural appropriation and lack of representation.

I was disgusted when I heard about this happening in Mountain View-Gotebo....even more disgusted seeing it and seeing that Adults....adults used innocent little kids who don't know any better and just taught them it was okay to mock and dehumanize native people. The parents whobdid this should be ashamed of themselves because they should know better and Intent doesn't negate the impact of the racism that they just taught their children and that they perpetuated against the native students and people that reside in this area. #racismondisplay #disgusted #disappointed #notyourmascots #notyourstereotype

While in Birmingham, I had the opportunity to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. It was a powerful monument to the Civil Rights era and those who fought for change. My only complaint as an Indigenous women is sitting down to watch the video that talks about the birth of Birmingham and how segregation and racism took hold in this city that was created by united efforts of both white and black people, while ignoring the Indigenous nations who belonged to that land centuries before Birmingham was an idea. The first two lines of the video erase the violent removal of the Indigenous people and sends the message that we were primitive and progress was the destruction, industrialization and over-exploitation of the land's resources. It was disturbing to see settler-colonialism being glorified and the erasure of native people being perpetuated in this setting. It goes to show that we still have a lot of work ahead of us in terms of recognizing and acknowledging our complicity as POC in upholding the very systems we work to dismantle. #civilrightsinstitute #birmingham #notyourprimitivendn #notyourstereotype
