***NEW BOOK ALERT***

At the printers as I type, ‘The Elephant Hotel’ is a new children’s book by Nicolas Burrows (yes, me). It started from a simple but logically flawed premise: what if elephants moved into a run-down post-colonial Indian hotel and ran it for other elephants? You know, but with er, human-sized tables and stuff but sometimes they look like they could be made for an elephant? How would they even fit in the rooms?! 

Well actually it started from a little collage I did a while ago...

...then I thought about it for a while until it turned into this kind of thing...

The book was made possible thanks to a partnership between WeTransfer and ELCAF (the East London Comic Arts Festival) and it’ll be launching at this year’s ELCAF on 16th June. 

There will also be a workshop at FOYLES in Charing Cross on 3rd June where you can come and make your own collaged elephant guests at The Grand Tusk Hotel...

Our six month residency at the House Of Illustration has come to an end. But it signals the opening of our exhibition ‘Three Men in A Boat’. The show is now on until June 11th, 2017. What makes your studio different?

When we visited illustration collaborative Nous Vous we were introduced to the inner workings of its innovative practice. Having recently returned from a residency at Facebook, and being involved in projects exploring illustration, sculpture and ceramics, the group is at an exciting stage in its practice.

“How can three creative makers collaborate successfully?” we asked. “It starts with conversation,” answered Nous Vous, “we then create systems where we all make an addition to a work so no one person owns it.”

We learned about the reality of commercial illustration and design commissions and how this, too, is a collaborative process. Nous Vous found collaborations with clients sometimes difficult when the clients ‘played it safe’ and could not be encouraged to take exciting risks.

The group has a distinct aesthetic – it was fun to see their influences, as Jay, William and Nicholas pulled out books on Olle Eksell and showed us where you could see their interest in Matisse and Rauschenberg play out in their work.

The studio visit was a real insight into the ideas of a group which is embracing the openness of illustration and who left us with a thought – “graphic design and illustration practice are not so separate”.

Nous Vous Studio Visit

On 8 May 2015 the Cass Hothouse team of staff and students visited graphic design and illustration studio Nous Vous on Arcola Street in East London. We documented the visit by taking photographs, recording audio and video, taking notes and making sketches. We were able to look at work-in-progress, sketches, tools of the trade, finished works and hear about the particular joys and challenges of working as a collaborative studio.
