Eris watched his wife dance around their private suite with their one-year-old son, Nova. Nova was the perfect combination of Eris and Lyra, with Eris’s curls, nose, and freckles, and he had Lyra’s eyes and smile; Eris had even caught the occasional nose crinkle like his wife when Nova giggled. Nova was also blessed with Illyrian wings like Lyra. Lyra had her wings out proudly, setting an example for her son, and Nova’s grew stronger every day. Lyra told Eris that, around 2-3 years, Ilyrians start flying, but Lyra and Madja, the Night Court’s healer, were shocked to see that his wings may be ready for flight at 1.5 years old.
Nova babbled and giggled as Lyra continued swaying with the infant. Fern, Eris’s grumpiest smoke hound followed the mother and son as they danced. Fern had become Nova’s unofficial guard. He and Nova had a bond Eris had not expected, especially with how energetic Nova was.
Nova was now 10 months old, he was starting to try to walk; he used Fern as something to hold onto as he gripped a tuff of fur in his little chubby hand. Eris watched as the boy stepped slowly Fern’s head whipped back every time he stopped. The hound would let out a small wine to encourage him to keep moving. Lyra stood on the other side of the hall encouraging her son to keep walking. Nova stepped again, this time the boy stepped more and Lyra cheered. The boy let go of Fern and stepped faster, much to Eris’s shock. The boy moved faster his little feet wobbling. Eris rushed behind the boy, but Fern caught him by his tunic first.
“He just took his first steps!” Lyra said excitedly. Running up to them and cheering for Nova.
Today was Nova’s birthday, and they were going to celebrate their son all day—hel, all week! Eris smiled at his little twin as he chanted, “Pa pa!” He and his mother approached Eris, pulling him into the dance. Lyra rested her unoccupied hand on his shoulder, pulling him side to side with them. Nova giggled as he swayed with them. Fern circled their feet his eyes watching the one-year-old.
“Hello, birthday boy,” Eris greeted his son. His son, whom Eris promised to protect and love better than his father, changed this court for him. Though Beron was still currently in the picture, Eris and Lyra kept Nova far from him. Tonight would be no different. Yes, Beron would be holding a ball in Nova’s honor, but Lyra and Eris would keep in contact with Beron Limited. Eris’s brothers, Hugo, Cole, and Branton, would be there as buffers, along with his mother, Rue. The ball was also open to the other courts, and Lyra’s family would be in attendance. Beron would be foolish to try something with all of them present.
“What are you thinking about?” Lyra asked, readjusting their wriggling son. Her wings twitched with the movement, and Nova mimicked it.
Eris watched the two violet-eyed Ilyrians as Lyra cooed Nova, encouraging Nova to flap his wings again.
“I was thinking about tonight,” Eris answered, “I can’t wait to celebrate our little Star.”
Nova smiled, recognizing his nickname and reaching for Eris to hold him. Eris happily took the child in his arms.
“I can’t believe he is already one,” Lyra sighed, thinking about Nova’s milestones.
“Me neither,” Eris admitted, “I feel like it was just yesterday I was rushing back for his birth.”
“And now he is walking and talking,” Lyra said, smiling at Nova. He babbled on and on “Ma” and “Pa” occasionally in the babbles.
“And soon, he will be flying,” Eris said, smiling as his mate lit up.
“I can’t wait. He is already showing so many signs of being ready to fly.”
“He will be one of the best.”
“Oh, without a doubt,” she agreed, “I am one of the best flyers if I say so myself.”
“Mother, spare us if he has an ego like you,” Eris teased. She scoffed.
“No mother spare us if he has your ego!” She shot back.
Upbeat music, laughter, and conversation roared in the ballroom as attendees chatted and danced. Eris stood beside his wife at the steps near a gifts-filled table. Nova was in Hugo’s arms, his wings glamoured away like his mother’s. The little birthday boy wore a deep red suit and a small crown of golden leaves. He matched the appearance of the Vanserra’s very well. He was grinning at his uncle as he pulled on his ear with force. Hue grimaced but allowed it. Eris knew Nova had Hue wrapped around his little finger. His brother loved Nova so much that he insisted on spending time with the boy at least once a week. He proudly bragged that he was the favorite uncle, much to Bran and Cole’s disagreement.
Lyra thanked another lord who approached with a large box for the baby. The lord then proceeded to tell his wife about his dying crops in his territory. Lyra quietly listened and told him to send a list of needed expenses and that they would figure out a way to assist the lord.
Tarquin and Kristen approached with young Cove in tow. Lyra smiled and cooed at her nephew. Eris felt a tug on the bond and a tinge of sadness as he smiled at the family. Nova was ten months older, yet seeing Cove made him reminiscent of Nova being that young.
Nova had just been born. Lyra lay in bed, resting the baby on her chest. Eris lay beside her, his head resting on Lyra’s. Nova slept quietly, and the couple watched the child with admiration.
Eris couldn’t believe he was a father. He never thought he would get to this point, yet here the babe was.
Eris felt a slight tug on his hand and looked down to see his son smiling up at him. His little crown resting lopsided on his little red curls. Eris lifted him high into the air, making the boy squeal with joy. The high lord and high lady of summer, along with his beautiful wife, all turned to smile at them.
“Are you having fun, Nova?” Eris asked his son. The boy nodded and babbled about something. Eris listened and smiled at how animated the boy was. His personality resembled his mother’s. He glanced at Lyra animatedly while Tarquin and Kristen were chatting.
With a chiming of glass, Eris looked up to see his father preparing to speak. Lyra moved to Eris’s side and kissed both Eris’s and Nova’s cheeks.
“Welcome everyone to the celebration of my Grandson’s first birthday. Thank you all for attending for my son and his wife. This year with young Nova has been wonderful, and I have enjoyed having a grandson to guide. He shows so much potential for being an excellent heir for Autumn. That being said, I cannot wait to enjoy the presence of more potential heirs from Eris and his loyal wife shortly.”
“Did he really just say that?” Kristen whispered to Lyra. Lyra rolled her eyes.
“He is trying to get a rise out of us.” She replied. “It’s Nova’s day, I won’t rise to his level.”
A large cake rolled out onto the dance floor it was seven tiers with elaborate leaf designs. Eris saw Nova’s eyes light up at the sight of the cake. He clapped his hands excitedly. “Cay!” Nova shouted excitedly. Eris moved closer to the cake for Nova. Lyra followed behind with her Nightcourt family and friends from summer as they sang to the boy wishing him a happy birthday.
The servant cut a slice for Nova and placed a candle into it. Eris lit the candle for Nova to blow out the candle. His little twin smiled as Lyra encouraged him to blow and the little boy puffed up his cheeks and blew out the flame. Cheers roared through the ballroom Cassian and Bran being the loudest.
Before anyone could grab a fork Nova smashed his hand into the sliced cake and brought it to his mouth. Eris heard a few gasps from the Autumn courtiers as Nova chewed happily.
Helion barked out a laugh, “That is the best way to eat cake!” Lyra let out a laugh as Nova offered a piece of smushed cake to Eris, icing smeared on Nova’s face and now Eris’s.
“Share with Mama too,” Eris encouraged the boy, a wicked grin on his face, as he leaned Nova toward Lyra. Lyra frowned and tried to back away just for Rhys and Hugo to catch her arms. She let out a small shout of protest as the boy smashed the cake into her face only a small piece actually reaching her mouth. Their friends laughed at the spectacle as Lyra wiped off the icing from her face shooting Hue and Rhys a dirty look.
The music began again, and Lyra pulled Eris and her son with now clean faces onto the dance floor. Eris lead them in the waltz, Nova in his arms. They spun around the floor, joy radiating off of them. Eris knew this was just the beginning of their happy life.
