Also, I feel like it's worth pointing out that Kirk decides to risk his career and his future by breaking Federation rules just to bring Spock's body back to Vulcan. Until he gets to Genesis, he has no idea that Spock is alive.
He could just take McCoy to Vulcan to drop off Spock's katra, but he decides instead to go through all this to pick up the body for proper burial.
