Iowa State Capitol, Des Moines, IA (3) by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: **Iowa State Capitol** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 76000799, date listed 10/21/1976 Grand Ave. and E. 12th St. Des Moines, IA (Polk County) The cornerstone of the Iowa State Capitol, more commonly called the Statehouse, was laid on November 23, 1871. It was dedicated on January 17, 1884, and completed around 1886. (1) The Iowa State Capitol in Des Moines, signifies the prodigious spirit of Iowa. Built between 1871 and 1886, this magnificent building represents, both inside and out, one of the nation's finest examples of 19th century architecture. Inside, the building features an array of majesty including many different types and colors of marble, works of art, fixtures, and carvings in both wood and stone. One of the most commanding features of the building is the towering dome. The dome, constructed of steel and brick, is externally gilded with 23-karat gold leaf. A belvedere on top of the large dome features a golden lantern. In addition, four smaller golden lanterns are each attached to copper-covered domes at every corner of the building. These four domes are decorated with vertical lines of intermittent gold, giving each a braided look. The State Capitol is truly an impressive Iowa landmark. Each year the State Capitol is visited not only by Iowans, but by people from all over the world. The Capitol's golden dome can be seen for miles, symbolizing representative government for the citizens of the state. Antioch Potash Plants, Antioch, NE (4) by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: **Antioch Potash Plants** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 79001455, date listed 5/16/1979 Address Restricted Antioch, NE (Sheridan County) For a few years, the Antioch vicinity was one of the most important potash-producing regions in the nation. Antioch grew from a small village to a town of about 2,000. When the First World War broke out, the United States was cut off from European sources of Potash, which was a component of fertilizer used in the cotton belt. Two University of Nebraska graduates in chemistry developed a method for separating potash from the alkaline lakes of the Nebraska Sand Hills. Large-scale production began in 1916. The potash-producing brine was pumped from the lakes to reduction plants near the railroads. By the spring of 1918, five plants were in operation in this vicinity. Nebraska potash was used in the manufacture of fertilizer, epsom salts, soda, and other products. With the end of the war, importation of foreign potash resumed. Because French and German potash could be produced more cheaply than the Nebraska product, the Nebraska potash boom collapsed. The last Antioch plant closed in 1921. Today, the ruins of reduction plants and pumping stations bear mute testimony to the activity which once made Antioch a major potash production center. 119 South Corey St, Griggsville, IL by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: **Griggsville Historic District** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 79000863, date listed 1/17/1979 Irregular pattern along Corey, Stanford, Quincy and Liberty Sts. Griggsville, IL (Pike County) The City of Griggsville (1970 population: 1,245) lies in west-central Illinois, four miles west of the Illinois River and about 60 miles west of Springfield, the state capital. The surrounding territory is generally quite rolling, particularly towards the river on the east, while the town-site itself is situated on a pronounced eminence often known as Griggsville Mound. The Griggsville Historic District is relatively confined to this central ridge with a westward extension along Quincy to just beyond Wall. Of 125 structures encompassed within the Griggsville Historic District, excluding garages and other incidental buildings, 52 have been evaluated as possessing special architectural and/or historical significance and an additional 11 were photographed by the Illinois Historic Structures Survey. Griggsville's land use pattern presents no particular surprises. Commercial uses are virtually confined to Quincy, the main east-west street, and a short stretch of Corey immediately south of Quincy, with the majority concentrated on both sides of the street in the sharply defined business block of Quincy from Corey to Stanford. Also helping to distinguish the block is the small green space in the center of the street, a green space whose western end is marked by Griggsville's best-known recent landmark: a skyscraper birdhouse for purple martins (erected in I965). Scott County Courthouse, Winchester, IL by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: **Winchester Historic District** - National Register of Historic Places Ref # 79000870, date listed 2/14/1979 IL 106 Winchester, IL (Scott County) Winchester (1970 population: 1,759) lies near the center of Scott County, of which it is the seat, approximately 40 miles WSW of Springfield, the state capital, and 70 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. Winchester is an excellent example of the small, rural Illinois county seat built on the town square plan as it developed during the third quarter of the 19th century. All the attributes are present: the square itself, enclosed by commercial buildings and an imposing courthouse; fine residences and churches, attesting to the relative sophistication of even a small county seat; an almost complete lack of industry; and, quite important in preserving the aura, no major highways. The Winchester Historic District includes most of the built-up area of the City of Winchester and a number of unincorporated parcels to the north and to the west of the 1971 corporate limits. Of 438 structures encompassed within the Winchester Historic District, excluding garages and other minor buildings, 86 have been evaluated as possessing special architectural and/or historical significance and an additional 64 were photographed by the Illinois Historic Structures Survey. Recent construction and intrusions account for 81 structures, or roughly 18% of those extant. Among the smaller and less pretentious structures may be found several fine quasi-Italianate and Queen Anne cottages, while the district's largest and most imposing building ~ the Scott County Courthouse — is so uniquely eclectic as to defy categorization.
