Who’s left to trust (Part 12)

It all happened too fast in front of Henrik’s eyes. One moment, he had a clear view of the two man in a fighting stance and in the blink of an eye, a door was thrown toward Jackie who wasn’t fast enough to dodge it properly. The hero was tossed backward, falling and rolling on his back until he hit a wall, groaning in pain since his injury in his side opened up again. Henrik was about to get up to help him when a second person was sent flying next to Jackie. It was Anti. He looked up in the direction he was before and smiled through a bloody mouth.
“Well, look who’s back.”
A third voice rang out in Henrik’s ear, making his blood turn cold. Anti really thought of everything.
“I’ve waited so long to play with all of you, it’s going to be FUN!”
Anti stood up, glitching in and out of existence before he jumped out of Henrik’s vision. Soon enough, an orange light illuminated Jackie’s stunned face, followed closely by a wave of heat. Henrik gestured wildly in Jackie’s direction, to get the hero attention. It took a while before he dragged himself to the doctor’s hideout, confused by what was going on in the room.
“What is happening? Why is Anti fighting Marvin? I thought they were a team!”
“I have no clue Jackie, I thought the same thing!”
“We’ll use that time to our advantage. While they’re both occupied by trying to kill each other, we should get out of here. We need to get Jamie and Chase out of here and to somewhere safe. We could...”
Before Jackie could finish talking, something, or someone, grabbed Henrik by behind and threw him in the middle of Marvin and Anti’s fight. He tried to scramble away from these two, but the magician caught him by the collar of his coat and spun him around.
“Finally... since I’ve been locked up in this prison of a room, I’ve dream again and again of tearing your body apart, limbs by limbs. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on you so that I could make you suffer as much as you did to me. I won’t let you get away this time.”
Henrik was thrashing around, trying to lessen the grip Marvin had on him but it was as if nothing he could do would have any effect. He turned around, trying to get help from someone but the only eyes he met were Anti’s, who looked smugly back at him.
“What, you don’t like being up close with your dear friend?”
“Anti, I swear I’ll...”
He hadn’t even finished cursing at Anti that him and Marvin were thrown to the floor violently by Jackie. The hero had finally moved from hiding to help Henrik get out of trouble. Henrik took advantage of the two men fighting each other to get back to Chase, still laying on the ground behind a flipped table. They were lucky that Anti and Marvin were too occupied to hit each other before to hurt Chase even more. Henrik had no idea where Anti was currently since Marvin and Jackie were the only two other person in the room, but he was more preoccupied at trying to wrap Chase’s wound up to really care. It wasn’t a deep wound, but the shock of being betrayed by your supposedly friend, and being stabbed by him too, would have make everyone fall unconscious. It only took a few moments for Henrik to wrap everything up and examine the black veins snaking around Chase’s arms. It wasn’t the first time that he had seen it, but it was always fascinating for him to see almost every vein infected by Anti’s corruption. How the dark lines around Chase’s neck made him look so pale and sick. He had to grab the serum he had developed a few years ago against Anti’s venom to help Chase recover faster. He felt a twinge of regret thinking that he had to use the full bottle on Chase. He had worked so hard on it. But, only a little bit longer and Chase would have been completely corrupted, and it would have been bad for them. Chase wasn’t the strongest of them, but as everyone saw in the passing weeks, he was the one that kept them together. Crouching, Henrik took some tentative steps toward his toppled-over shelf, wishing over and over that its content was intact and that no one was seeing him.
“Trying to sneak out, Doc?”
He shot a quick glance to his left, glaring at the bruised-up guy sitting cross legged next to him.
“I don’t have time to waste, Anti. I have to...help Chase.”
“And missing out on the splendid fight 5 feet away from you? What a bummer.”
Telling himself to ignore Anti was a way easier task than he thought. Still crouching, Henrik walked past Anti, still talking nonsense as usual, and reached the shelf’s handle without problem. Or he thought. A hand grabbed his shoulder and whirled him around, making him fall on his ass.
“I have an idea Schneep! What if you grab that antidote of yours and I go back to Chase to finish what I’ve started? See who’s the fastest!”, whispered Anti while grabbing Henrik’s right wrist.
“I think we have a way bigger problem than knowing who’s faster, Anti.”
Anti barely had the time to raise his eyebrow in confusion that Marvin jumped on top of him, punching blindly to land a hit on his new plaything. Without missing a beat, Henrik swung open the shelf, hitting Anti’s arm in the process, and grabbed the small bottle filled with a green liquid before leaping out of danger. The more he thought about it, the more he felt grateful for asking Jackie for some parkour trick. The hero was already next to Chase, both arms under Chase’s armpit and dragging him out of the room, still wincing in pain.
“What are you doing Jackie?”
“I’m getting him OUT of here! We can inject that thing somewhere safer than here!”
Without more arguing, both men left the room, never looking back at the two that were fighting. Henrik’s instincts were telling him to go back inside, making sure his brother wasn’t in danger. But he had to take care of Chase first.
“Jackie, can you go get Jamie for me? With all the commotion that has been happening in here, I think he might be awake and very confused. I’ll stay here with Chase until he wakes up from the injection.”
“Isn’t it dangerous to stay that close from where Anti and Marvin are? We could bring Chase to Jamie’s room and then from there I could get Jack from the guest’s room and bring them all...”
“No need Jackie. Marvin and Anti are way too preoccupied by having the last hit on the other to really bother with us. We’ll get Jack after everything is settle. Now go!”
Jackie took off in a sprint, repeating under his breath at each step that the faster he brings Jamie back, the faster they can all leave this place for somewhere safer for them. They could deal with Anti and Marvin later. He didn’t like the idea of leaving Jack in this house, but he didn’t know the state in which he was. For what Henrik had told them, Jack was in bad shape, but his life wasn’t in danger. He had to believe Henrik, he told himself over the beat of his shoes hitting the floor. They had to trust each other, or they would be destroyed.
Soon enough, Jackie reached Jamie’s room, the door still left open after the way they rushed out of the room earlier. He came in the room as fast as he could and turned toward Jamie. He froze for a second and a chill went down his spine when he saw the state in which Jamie was. He was awake – thank god, he thought – but the whimper and silent cries that were escaping Jamie’s mouth made Jackie regret his first thought. Jamie had his eyes screwed shut, his knees tucked near his chest, shaking and rocking back and forth on one corner of his room, which was in shamble. His broken arm was hanging limply next to him, reminding Jackie of what he did to him. He wished Jamie didn’t remember that part. Not a single thing was in order in the room and the clothes he was wearing were in a similar state.
“Jamie? Jamie, it’s me, Jackie? Jackaboy?”
With everything that had happened recently, Jackie was expecting Jamie to look him dead in the eye and tell him he had no clue who he was. At that point, he had lost hope that they could go back to how things were before. He was pleasantly surprised when Jamie threw himself in his arms and started sobbing. Jackie, without missing a beat, started saying sweet nothing to his brother while rubbing his back. He wanted to stay right here, making sure that Jamie was completely calm without going back to the others, but they had to leave. Jamie stepped back and nodded, then he started running, grabbing Jackie by the forearm and dragging the hero after him.
When Chase woke up, he felt as if dying would hurt less than whatever he was going through right now. His head was hurting him, like someone was hammering his skull from the inside. His stomach wasn’t in a better shape. He could feel his heartbeat pounding on his ribcage, a searing hot pain breaking any thought he had previously. He hissed in pain, which was answered back by gasps around him. He was dragged upward into a sitting position and he could feel a pair or two of hands holding him like that. He heard voices around him, more frantic than the other, but he couldn’t make out a single word. The familiar noise of static was buzzing at the back of his head and was drowning all the sound around him. He decided to focus on the white noise, since it had a weird relaxing effect on him. Also, it helped him ignore the annoying voices. Unfortunately, the static disappeared when a gentle hand laid itself on his shoulder and squeezed lightly. He opened up his eyes to come face to face with the bowler hat man. What was his name again? Jackie? No... Ja...mes? James? Not that either. He just had to pretend to know.
“Wha...What’s going on here?”
“Chase! You’re alright! Can you stand up? We have to get you, Henrik and Jamie-”
Jamie. That was his name.
“-out of the house before I go back inside to stop Marvin and Anti from killing each other.”
They went back to bickering after that, the doctor telling the other two that it wouldn’t be so bad to get rid of Anti. Or was it Marvin? He couldn’t really tell. He looked around himself, trying to focus on something else than their voices. If only the static was back to drown out the surrounding noise. His eyes landed on a small bottle rolling back and forth on the floor not far from him. The liquid in it, a greyish green, was sloshing around in a hypnotic way. It helped Chase to focus on something else than the headache that was growing in intensity. He snapped out of his dazed mind when a body crashed to the floor next to him. The bloodied person next to him, Marvin by what the others were screaming, started to rise up, leaning heavily on his knee before him and Chase locked eyes. Chase was taken aback by how red Marvin’s eyes were. If it wasn’t for the dark circle under his eyes, Chase would have thought that Marvin had spent an entire week crying. They both fell to the floor, Marvin jumping on top of Chase and the screams around them made Chase realize that having the magician on top of him was not a good situation to be in.
“Chase! Chase! Dear, oh my god, I can’t believe it! It’s really you this time! Not a fake, not a dream, not a hallucination!”, repeated Marvin through heavy tears while squeezing Chase in his arms.
It was complete silence between all of them except for the nonsense that was coming out of Marvin’s mouth. Jamie took the first step by gently removing Marvin from over Chase and helping them to go back to a sitting position. Chase was still too stunned to really react accordingly but Jamie and Jackie, who had both kneeled next to them, were rubbing Marvin’s back while trying desperately to make him stop crying. Chase felt a weight settle in his stomach.
The heartfelt moment was cut off by the door being slammed open once again. A bloodied Anti came out, holding his side and leaning on the door frame. He had looked better, that’s for sure. Anti glanced around him at the others, his eyes stopping on Chase. Jackie, Marvin and Jamie were all tensed, ready to pounce on the enemy if something were to happen. But Chase and Anti were more focused on frowning at the other to really care. Anti squinted his eyes at him before looking up and glaring at Henrik. Chase only had time to see Henrik shrugging his shoulders with a hint of a smile on his lips before the static made him snap his head in Anti’s direction.
“It’ll work next time. Just so you wait”, snarled Anti, his knife pointed toward them before he disappeared into a cloud of static and glitches.
Then the silence came back.

I did a gif version of them, the quality is meh but i like it nonetheless! Also, I’m sorry for the size of the drawings…
(also: weird handwriting does a comeback!)
Sam is pretty tired after the show! He’s taking time to relax and take a break to be in a better shape tomorrow!
