Sojourner Truth was someone who's legacy has come up again and again in my work. I didn't always plan on doing social work, originally I went to Nursing school. Sojourner was one of the Nursing Theorists we learned about. Most people know of her as an abolitionist, she was also a nurse who pioneered community health, community nursing practices in Black communities, and improved sanitation practices in Nursing. She also fought for equal opportunity professional nursing education. When I dropped out of the Nursing program, I learned about her again through Intersectional Feminism and her speech "Ain't I a woman?" she described the multiple marginalizations of being a Black woman in the labor force. Sojourner may be the most recognized, but Black women have been providing care, healing and medicine since the dawn of time. After being kidnapped and forced into servitude, raped and forced to have children that were abused and/or sold away, then forced to breastfeed and raise white children, to being forcibly sterilized and portrayed as bad mothers by white women....
