At that time he was a sort of freelance pitcher in the Negro League, playing for whatever team would pay him the most. On May 15, 1941, he opened the season for the NY Black Yankees. He made his major league debut in 1948, becoming the first black pitcher in the American League and the oldest rookie.

The Black Yankees were a New York City team that started out in 1931 as the Harlem Stars. They were renamed a year later and joined the Negro National League in 1936. They disbanded in 1948, after the major (white) leagues began hiring black players.
