Brienne, the Maid of Tarth, the blue, the beauty

I'm not entirely sure what I was on about in regards to Brienne's appearance in my previous Brienne piece. Regardless of beauty standards, Brienne is supposed to be unattractive.

I do want to address Brinnes's potential ancestry. I personally don't think that Brienne is Dunk's descendant. They both embody the same archetype, both being true knights defending the innocent. Brienne's family also had a replica of Dunk's first coat of arms, but there's a number of reasons that could happen. Either Rhae or Daela could have married into the noble house of Tarth, or one of their children, or even a granddaughter could've married Selwyn. These people could've brought a love for Dunk, and a replica of his shield based on different stories from their family.

Lady #Brienne the Maid of Tarth, sworn protector to the women of House Stark, and heir of Evenfall

There is so much to say about Brienne. She's probably Martin's most successful engagement with someone who truly doesn't fit into rigid gender roles. Setting her supposed ugliness aside for a moment, she was abnormally tall most of her life, and is often described as flat chested. These allow her to more easily engage in swordplay, and horsemanship, and other more traditionally masculine activities. But these aren't safe for her either, her master at arms makes her butcher animals to prove she can kill when the time comes, her camp mates make a bet as to who can take her virginity, and when it comes back to their lord that they plan to rape her, she is blamed.

And then we return to her face. Swollen lips, oversized blue eyes, an abundance of freckles, and a broken nose. All this placed on a "horse like" head. Most of these features would traditionally beautiful with a slight modification to the adjectives. Plump lips, large blue eyes, and freckled cheeks. Besides her nose, which could be a charm point to some, she might be beautiful. It might be expectations of beauty in Westeros, or simply people expecting the brutish body to have a hideous face and subconsciously matching them. My Brienne has some less desirable features, but my reference was Sarah Jessica Parker.

A woman, who while profoundly gorgeous, was called horse faced for much of my adolescence.
