Occupy Perth meets CHOGM Action Network
Yesterday Perth's CHOGM Action Network held a joint organising meeting with Occupy Perth's organising collective at the Perth Activist Centre.
Talks were mostly based around both groups aims and times and dates for both protests.
The United March Against CHOGM (organised by CAN) will take place as planned at 10am meeting in Forest Place. Protesters are encouraged to bring any issues close to their hearts to the march. CAN has created a list of demands which include: ending the mandatory detention of refugees, removing troops out of Afghanistan, building Aboriginal rights and adopting renewable energy now.
Protesters will meet in Forest Place for some speeches and then continue towards the Convention Centre.
Members of Occupy Perth say that they were inspried by the Occupy Wall Street protests that have been occuring in America for the last month.
The protest has gained media attention over NYPD brutality and the sheer number of protesters it is attracting with an estimated 15,000 people marching on Wednesday (the biggest protest in since the Seattle WTO protests of 1999). Student's battling student loan debt are regulars, Airline pilots joined the march for a day and the US Marines are tipped to join in the near future.
The Occupy collective appear to be arguing only for a reclaimation of rights, an end to equality and for the corruption of governments and banks to end.
Occupy Perth will kick off at 1pm in Forest Place on October 15.
