Ode to cats.
I spend 80% of the time with my cats in awe of their magic, 15% of the time worrying about how I'm gonna survive once they're no longer alive, and 5% being annoyed.
This percentage when it comes to dogs is verrrrry different. I would say 40% guilt, 40% joy, 20% shit on my floor (potty training is still futile). Bella is a handful at times. She's an adorable complicated mess of a creature and I love her, I wanna make that clear. She really warms my heart, and this year seeing her stocking on my wall almost chokes me up because I've wanted her for so long. But I really don't understand her most of the time. I can't relate to her hardly at all. This is so odd to me because I started off life as a total dog devotee. Team Dog 4-EVA.
However, as I've gotten older, it's become abundantly clear that if I weren't a person, I should really have been a cat. I just get them. They sleep constantly. I sleep constantly. They don't expect much from me, aside from whining a few hours after I've fed them (see: the 5% annoyance) and a clean litterbox. I don't expect much from myself either. Meem will lay behind my back while I'm sleeping, which has been a lot lately. Eddie has to be near me in every room, will tolerate cuddling with me for 10 seconds, then leave while still keeping a several feet radius within me. I am Wendy's queen whenever Jared is gone; other than that, I can go days without seeing her. Her choice, not mine.
I respect that Milo doesn't usually cuddle with me because he wants to. Rather, that he wants something else. For some reason it never bothers me. I admire his hustle. He only legit wants my embrace when he's at my dad's house. He LOVES my dad's house, and loves visiting there. Ed is really compelling to me. I don't know how someone can love me so much and yet tolerate my grasp for such a limited amount of time. He never really wants anything, so I know it's genuine (LAWL).
Bell follows me everywhere. If I focus on anything else momentarily she gives me the saddest look, like I just told her there's no Santa Claus. Anytime we aren't engaging with her, she is devastated. But it also feels so great to make her happy. A lot of high highs and low lows with her. Dogs just have this way of breaking my heart.
What I'm trying to say is that I am both TEAM DOG and TEAM CAT respectively, but what I've realized that I will always require more cats than dogs. They just gel so much better with my psyche. Right now the equation of 3 cats for every 1 dog seems to be successful.
