Care goes through reasonable amounts of denial. They get emotionally invested and empathize with people very easily! So seeing someone they know snap in real-time would be very upsetting if they'd gotten to see him at his best (or at least decent). They might feel guilty for not seeing how deep things had ran or getting to know him as well as they could've.

They don't wallow in self-loathing though, that's not how they roll. This is Care. Care bleeds altruism like it's nobody's business. And Care is a big fan of martyring themselves if they get it up in their head that they can help someone. I wouldn't doubt they'd get themselves in some very bad spots if it meant just trying to reason or talk with him.

They won't give up on you :). (Even if they really really should! I am going to punt them!)
