109. practicing a skill together
To say that Ikora was pleased with how far Mara had come would be an understatement. More specifically, her delight was in the fact that the two had developed a bond reminiscent of the one shared between the acting Vanguard, and it was strong enough that her apprentice seemed to be able to detect her movements before they happened - most of the time, anyway. When it came down to sparring, Ikora tried to remain a step ahead, but Mara was certainly getting smarter with each move. It would only be a matter of time before she was a master at dissecting and decoding her partners’ Light fluctuations to know exactly where and what they were doing at all times.
As Vanguard, they each had to be a master of all three subclasses. So it would make sense, then, that they would teach and learn from each other hands-on. Sparks flew between them as they practiced with Arc Light. It might as well have been little more than a fast-paced game of catch, with both women tossing lightning at each other in such an easygoing manner, grinning and laughing, each doing her best to outmaneuver the other into enduring a little shock. Bouncing Light back and forth was not a common strategy, but it had been crucial to the Vanguard for some time: withstanding, enhancing, and even controlling your teammates’ Light could change the tide of a battle of any scale. And beyond that? It’s honestly just kind of fun.
It seemed like neither of them ever touched the ground as they leaped back and forth, calling energy seemingly far beyond their grasp back to their hands and then throwing it outside the reach of the other to see who would drop it first. The stakes were low - the most Mara would get out of this was a warm smile, a laugh, and a pat on the back either way - but it was certainly rewarding in the time they spent together.
Ikora wouldn’t trade it for the world.
