The True Gift of Having Girlfriends
The day of love is just a few weeks away, but this year? This year, I’m looking at it a little differently than I have in years past. While I’m madly in love with the sweetest man, I’m thinking that this upcoming Valentine’s Day should be less about that kind of love and more about the love I have for my ladies. More about the girlfriends who stick with us patiently - not just when we’re inviting them to a fun party or drinking a good bottle of wine over candid conversation or such, but the ones who send us texts cheering us on when work has us by the scruff of our necks, leaving their calls unanswered, meaning we’re in town less and less, and leaving us saying no to birthday parties that we used to vow we’d never miss - even if it meant we had to fly halfway across the country. I want to give gifts of love and appreciation to THOSE loves of my life - The girls who you pick up the conversation right where you left off - even when you haven’t seen one another in 2 years. 💗💗 For my birthday, my dear friend Ye-Hui Lu Goldenson gave me a shining gift that was almost too much for my heart to handle - I mean it was a Diamond Foundry diamond necklace, y’all. And, while it was absolutely decadent, it reminded me of our friendship together. You see, Yehui is a source of beaming light for all who know her - with a smile that can warm up the coldest of rooms. Our friendship was forged over food and wine at @LAfoodwine a few years ago, and has been nurtured over Galentines lunches at @Gearys, karaoke sessions at @Breakroom86 and even one talk that truly tested our friendship. But, at the center of it all are two friends who care for each other and want the best for each other. So, it seems only right that a diamond necklace that Yehui would give me would hang somewhere between my vocal chords and my heart - nestled between the place where my voice can sound and my heart can love. This Valentine’s Day, I say we gift our girlfriends & ourselves with the same foresight, planning and love that we gift our romantic partners. As for what to get?
