Chapter 1: Souvlaki
Year: 1982
There’s many names you can call a creature whose existence only matters like a ship to the trenches of the depths. A creature whose existence wholly existed before like plankton, mindless. These creatures had gotten appendages and ran to the surface to try to forget the existence of beasts that lie beneath the surface of the salty waters. They called themselves human, these little creatures and their descendants loved to name each other, a brand of uniqueness that didn’t add or take away from their natural flavor. Escape as they may, call themselves whatever they like, but to Hannibal they were still for him to catch and drag below the depths.
Hannibal’s nostrils and gills on his neck flared as he could feel that second set of teeth behind the front flat ones coming from his palate, growing as he saw the wreckage he had choreographed against the sharp rocks. From their feeble appendages kicking and creating the vibrations into the water he could feel three of the humans, smelling their desperation with the iron of their blood mixing with the salt of the ocean.
Hannibal saw the debris from one of their water-bound vehicles-this one specific to netting shrimp, crab, and other cockroaches of the ocean-floating down from above. He danced around the debris, his slender body spun like a pirouette through the water and around the ruins that would continue downward to the trenches.
With the darkness above, his red eyes glint in the light of flame as he broke through the surface silent. The flames of the ship cooking his eyes and the smell was lusty and intense, his jaw unhitched. He saw the three humans clutching debris and there was one on the protruding teeth of rock he hadn’t felt, but now above the salt he could smell the creature’s odor.
He went for the one floating further from the rocks, humming his song. The man turned with a dazzled expression and enthusiasm to kick those appendages away from light; wading toward the darkness and into Hannibal’s voracious maw. He smiled at the creature with his flat teeth having gone into his gums, his sharp teeth shimmering and Hannibal netted his arms around the sailor who had let go of his floating debris as Hannibal whispered a lullaby of the depths captivating the human man with his cruel eyes and beautiful words, ones that his ears not understanding but floated to nonetheless.
Hannibal smiled as he unhitched his jaw and ripped the esophagus of the sailor open, feeling his screams gurgle out and listening to it like a light breeze of rain hitting the surface of the water. The man, still alive, and now trying to let go of Hannibal’s embrace pathetically while blood poured out as Hannibal felt the man’s heart rapid as he used his needle-sharp sixth finger open his chest cavity and grab the heart as he felt it’s last beat. Hannibal unwrapped his torso from the human as Hannibal slithered closer toward this wreckage, hand in hand with the body.
He could hear the men screaming now and the small figure on the rocks was quiet and watching. Hannibal, feeling the eyes and smelling the lack of fear from this human looked at her in the eyes. He saw a look of curious repression as she watched him as if he were a dancer to the eyes of the conductor.
Hannibal went below the surface under the two sailors (one whose blood had mixed with the water from his leg) who had stilled their useless kicking, yelling for their cohort in a desperate attempt to call him to them.
Hannibal wrenched the head off the body and as the body floated down with the rest of the scattered pieces of waste and ship to the depths, Hannibal pushed the head above the surface so that it would land between the two bodies of meat.
He smelled their fear as they each pushed away from the last bit of ship they had between them. The one with the gash in his leg was the first to call out, “Shrike! Shrike, throw us the fucking rope!” Hannibal grabbed his broken leg and with a carefulness only practiced by years of experience, he opened the gash further with a sadistic smile to himself as he used his hand to crush the bone, hearing a satisfying break and a gentle sigh released from him as he heard a loud scream. He used the propelling power the human was using with his
“Dammit, Shrike! Be fucking useful!” The man had gone down a few times as his other leg tried to swim his whole body away from Hannibal’s grasp as Hannibal used that weight to tear the limb off. Hannibal’s gills opened as he broke the surface tension of the water for a flash of a moment in what could be a graceful leap and he used his torso to weigh down the kicking and screaming human male.
Below the surface, in his domain. The human could see the significantly larger creature. His slender, muscular torso with a sparse shimmering scales of black and eyes bloodshot and red with hunger and a smile that was absent of joy. His long tail wrapped around the two like a serpentine hug. Hannibal’s palette tasted the sailor’s fear and swallowed his screams. His fear tasted strong and made the blood taste pickled pairing well with the salt of Hannibal’s home.
Hannibal went toward the shore where the other sailor had made their way. He could smell both the creatures. But there was something… strange.
