{Ranks and structure of the New Roman Army}

Please excuse me while I geek out over make-believe bureaucracy. Mostly this is for my own knowledge/amusement (Why does this amuse me???) but I thought I'd put it up here just in case. Just be warned - this could well be quite dry for anyone who isn't as invested in the organisation of imaginary militaries as I am :-P

Every soldier in the New Roman Army has a serial number. This is a string of numbers and letters that details his exact placement within the Roman Military structure. The general structure is this:

[Rank] [Legion (Abbreviated)].Cohort.Century.Troop Number.

The Troop numbers are managed chronologically, with the first batch of troopers in the century being numbered 001-080, and ascending one by one after that. Veterans retain their serial number after retirement, to claim pensions and so they can be re-drafted in cases of Imperial Emergency.

The Ids are present on a soldier's service record, along with any he may have previously held (in the case of patrician or equite ranks – see below). They are also issued as fabric and metal badges, and are worn on the sleeves of the uniform (in the case of fabric badges) or over the chest.

Ranks are shown by Roman numerals, occasionally with a greek letter as suffix if there is a special role associated.

* This is my only significant liberty with the Roman command structure. I felt the position of Imaginifer was outmoded, so changed it to the position of  a political officer. These are Equites appointed to the legion on a semi-permanent basis by the propaganda wing of the Principate civil service (I'll work out exact names at a later date). Their duty is to oversee the enforcement of the ideals of the Pax Romana through the example of the troops.

They do not have Judicial authority, but can press summary charges and are answerable only to the Governor himself. In dire situations, they can also issue orders to anyone of V rank or lower, but these actions have to ratified post-hoc by a praetor or higher.

Commissars have a network of political officers and informants spread out through the ranks, effectively internal beneficarii, though only sometimes noted as such by the state. The risk of corruption is, needless to say, very high.

** Imperator was a rank that was only offered in the event of a great victory, and effectively denoted a military commander whose service had had a significant impact on the security of the Roman State. Along with the title, a great procession through the streets of Rome was part of the rights of an imperator. As such, it was a much sought after and prestigous honour, ad could easily be a springboard into further political and military success. At this point in history, the title could only be granted by the Senate (with the emperor presiding, of course). Later on, it would become something declared by the troops after a great victory, which would cause no end of trouble, but that's a story for another time.

There is also the rank of Dux, an informal title referring to the commander of two or more legions. The Governor of a selected province (in our case, Syria) had command of all the legions within said province. To be independent of the Governor, Legati had to have specific dispensation from the Imperial Palace; propraetorian imperium.

Promotion worked slightly differently to how we're used to in the modern military. Ranking up from a trooper to the First Centurion of the First Cohort in the Legion was possible for a Roman Citizen Plebeian. On completion of a term of service as a Centurion (which rarely happened, since Centurions had the highest turnover rate of any position in the army), a pleb received entry into the Equites class (which was normally gates by inheritance and a minimum income level, subject to review by officials called censors every few years).

Regarding the footsloggers, III denotes a greenhorn – one who's never seen combat. A second class trooper has survived at least one instance of combat. A First-class trooper is either: promoted from II or III by the Centurion to serve as the head of the tent-group (the contubernium) – effectively a corporal; or awarded the rank after receiving a medal or commendation.

What this means in terms of Serial number is that anyone of XL rank or above has a truncated ID. (excluding the Aquilifer, whose ID includes his cohort/century/enrolment number of origin). So the Legate of the XII Fulminata's rank ID just reads “L XII-FUL”, While that of Augustus himself would simply read CCC/M/P. The Proconsul of Syria would have the tag CC-SYR. After a term of service, the ID is appended with the year of service, or year in which the service is concluded (AUC). SO Dolbella, the Proconsul for Africa from 24-25, would have the ID of CC-AFR 778.

Outside of that, though, there was very little chance for promotion. Everyone of command rank from Tribune upwards served their positions for a fixed term. The only exceptions were the imperial ranks, which were held for life (though not necessarily for long).

Auxiliaries were deployed in cohorts attached to legions. These could either be Infantry-based Cohortes, cavalry-based Alae, or mixed-deployment Cohortes Equitatae. Other formations could also be put together on a special basis – I'm calling these the Proprii = “specialists”. The Peregrini (= “resident foreigners”, the recruitment stock for the Auxilia) made up the vast majority of the formation, but were commanded by an Equite, an Auxiliary Prefect (I can't find data about terms of service anywhere, so we'll assume a fixed term like anyone else). The ID's of Auxiliaries are mostly the same as normal plebs, except for the cohort section. The general formula is:

AUX {number}-{formation type}

The formation types possible are: Cohors (COH), Ala, (ALA), Cohors Equitata (C/EQ), or Proprius (PRO)

A Few examples at work:

Our Decimus is in the 6th Century of the 9th Cohort of III Gallica, and is (probably) a second-class trooper (though I'd have to get the author's agreement on that one) = II III-GAL.09.06.278

Our Titus (bless him) is a Third-Class soldier in the 3rd Century of the 2nd Cohort of VI Ferrata = III VI-FER.02.03.423

Gaius is the Senior Centurion of the 3rd Numidian Ala, attached to III Augusta (though this may change soon) = X III-AUG.03-ALA.01.214

The Current Governor of Syria is (Probably) Lucius Pomponius Flaccus = C-SYR. The previous one, Lucius Aelius Lamia, ended his term of service in 32 AD = C-SYR 784.

The Current Legate of the III Augusta is one Lucius Vitellius = L III-AUG. His term of service is due to end later this year, whence his id shall be L III-AUG 787. He is slated to become the next Propraetor of Syria, in which case his tag shall be re-written to say C-SYR, and in official functions he will be able to wear both his Legion badge and his Governor's badge.

So yeah, Roman ranks and stuff – it reveals a fair amount about the politics and government operating behind the military. I'll get into that, and the status of Judea, in a later post.
