premise
thousands of years after the extinction of humanity, the remnants of life fled to the ocean and subsequently were consumed by microscopic organisms soon to be called “inclusions”. they would eventually reform into crystal structures before being once again raised out of the ocean. these beings are granted sentience by their inclusions, and become Gems.
the Gems are humanoid, and are given eyes + carved and refined by adam (purple diamond), the oldest known Gem. while their bodies are made up entirely of their namesake gem/mineral, they use powder to cover up some parts to resemble human skin.
they are effectively immortal as long as they have access to sunlight. if broken, Gems are able to be put back together again. note that they also operate on the Mohs Scale to measure hardness (the ability to scratch other gems or objects), and a toughness scale (the ability to resist being broken)
Gems, notably, do not feel pain upon being broken, but as they are shattered, they tend to become sleepy and lose consciousness.
Gems are born roughly every 100-1,000 years, but there are rare cases of gems being born within the same decade, or even rarer, the same year.

Other Species:
the Gems face enemies known as Lunarians, who come from the moon. in this AU, they come down to earth on a semi-regular basis, shattering whatever gems they can in a short period, and when able to, will even abduct Gems back to the moon.
Lunarians are also immortal, much like the Gems. Unlike the Gems, once ‘destroyed’, Lunarians quickly reform back on the moon.
The current leader of the Lunarians is Nyx, and their motivations for taking gems is unknown to the earthdwellers. For whatever reason, they have also been trying to contact the Admirabilis.
(aim to use the other two species to try and become human again.)
The Admirabilis are an underwater species that reside in the large ocean around the island. They are the only mortal species that also have human sentience. Tend to avoid the other two species.
Setting:
The Gems reside on an isolated island that’s quite large. Specifically, they live in a facility that’s been carved into a cliffside, leading down into a green valley. There, each Gem has their own assigned resting quarters, along with areas to chat or work.
The island is home to small yet lush vegetation in the form of bushes, shrubs, and small trees. There is also wildlife, albeit small, such as birds, insects, and the occasional jellyfish. No mammals have evolved yet.
Gem Society:
The most prominent threat to the Gems are the Lunarians, and so all those with hardness 6 and above are trained to fight by Adam. if specifically requested, adam will teach a lower hardness Gem to fight.
Those who aren’t strong enough to fight, or are brittle to the point of being unable to fight anyway, are instead given other jobs. they range from caring for the local environment to creating tools to strategizing battles. other noteworthy roles include the librarian (currently Sylvan), the Gem doctors (Harmony and Reukra), and Adam’s second in command (Jaern).
there are other gems also studying other aspects of the world (ie Audrey also studying the Admirabilis and the local jellyfish)
