Oil Lamps
Even before I got a lathe, I had an idea I wanted to try, which was to turn a wooden base for an oil lamp. So far I have 3 attempts. The above is my favorite so far.
It’s a little amateur; it is certainly sturdy and functional, but as you can see below, I made the oil recess hidden and made it out of an old medicine bottle epoxied to the oil lamp device. It then slides tightly into the recess.
Same principle for the others. One of them has a tiny bit of spalting and a nice knot but came out slightly asymmetrical; the other one came out well, but is more of a “messy” kind of spalting which isn’t my favorite (I like either the detailed fine zone lines or interesting colors).
I think next I am going to try to find a large enough piece to shape it cross-grain, like the large spalted bowl below, to get more exposed spalt lines.
