Oil consumption with increase in income per person
Step 5: The research question I have for this assignment is :
Q: Is oil consumption per person dependent upon the increase in income per person ? My hypothesis for this question is that as the per person income increases , the oil per person consumption also increases. Also if this is true then is the income per person in developing countries is also one of the factors for increased oil consumption.
I started with Step 5 so that the reader knows the topic of interest. This is the first assignment of the coursework where we have to select a research question with the avaliable data and codebook provided.
How i came up with the question is explaiend in the steps below.
Step1: The data set i chose was from Gapminder.org and Gapminder codebook. There were very few variables in the Gapminder codebook and it wasn't hard to go through all. The variable that caught my interest was "oilperperson".
Step2: Now that i had found a variable "Oilperperson", i wanted to study the relationship between oil consumption and Global economy. In order to do so i selected other variables such as "IncomePerPerson", "employrate", "Urbanrate". I wasn't sure if we were supposed to use just the variables provided in the codebook or anything from the website too. There is enormous data available on the gapminder.org and i wanted to choose other variables such as to study GDP or how oil consumption per person effects the coal consumption. Hence these variables are not in the Codebook , i didn't include them in my codebook.
I decided to stick to study the oil consumption per person and its relation with income per person and the variables that i included in my codebbok are Oilperperson, IncomePerPerson, countries .
Step3: Now that i have the primary question to study the relationship between oil consumption and income per person, i also want to select a secondary topic on how the consumption of oil in developing countries have changed in comparison with the developed countries and its relationship with incomePerPerson.
Step4: I did a lot of research on the topics related to oil consumption . For example, one article presents the view on how oil prices have changed over the years and may or may not be associated with the consumption[1]. It also talks about how oil price affects global economy[1]. The other article interestinlgy talks about how the oil consumption per person is declined in developed countries and have increased in developing countries [2]. This intrigued my research to do further analysis on the topic that brought me to choose my secondary research question as listed in step3.
I also came across an article on how developing countries demanded more oil than average US consumption per person [3]. This helped me to understand the relationship between the variables better and pick up a research question successfully.
