klaus has a lot of issues with the dark -- in this essay i will....
There's nothing wrong with reylo or any ship that people like. Let people ship what they want to ship.
heather duke was a semi-normal girl before she met heather chandler. naturally gorgeous, thin, with a smile plastered onto her face before she ever had the chance to frown. she grew up coddled by her father's money and her mother's plastic love. she liked to knit, watch tv, read books. she studied hard early in the mornings and til late at night. heather didn't get out much but that didn't stop her from being popular and adored. it took a few months of heather chandler's reign until heather duke started to bark more, bite less (literally). she stopped caring for her studies, focused more on getting cute clothes, throwing parties.
heather was bullimic by the age of 16. not that that would have to do with anyone else — she always considered her face to be a little less symmetrical, her nose a little too big, her eyebags too puffy. she couldn't see the pretty girl beneath after having dealt with heather chandler for so long. stopped wearing the colour red even though it had been her favourite since forever. still salty about how she didn't get to wear red on her birthday like she did every other year that passed — she starts becoming sick of the colour green. the sight of it makes her feel quite somber in adulthood anyway.
heather becomes severely depressed. the girls didnt see her once during the summer of 88, didn't pick up the phone, nothing. during the events of the film/show, she is literally a black hole of a girl. her entire personality is a facade, she is not who she is, she is playing a role etc. & she doesn't play this role well: but nobody around her cared to notice.
important note: (somewhat shamefully) i love the musical, i love the songs, i love all the portrayals of heather duke, but i'll tend to characterise her a bit more closely to the film & alice lee's performance. the caricatures are obviously what make heathers such a cult classic but she is a real human being & she is just an annoying teenage brat. there's a sweetheart in there though, you just have to dig super deep.
so she takes part in all the extracurriculars she needs to to get into college, and she does. heather graduates from westerburg and then goes to NYU studying business, just like her father. she spends the four years bored and lonely with little friends because of her repulsive, horrid personality. she is not aware that she is a cunt.
she then gets into harvard law, and slowly as the years go by she becomes more and more estranged from her family as she starts to realise how disconnected she is from them, how they provide nothing of substance to her life other than money, and starts celebrating thanksgiving, christmas, and every other holiday by herself. she is lonely and has no friends or family. considers killing herself, writes a letter, doesn't go through with it.
takes up smoking. starts taking drugs. nothing works, nothing stops her from wanting to scratch her skin off, crawl into someone else and start fresh.
starts trying to sort herself out. works (at a diner near her university) for the first time in her life. goes to therapy, starts trying to be a nicer person. she will snap & be rude, but she is trying to be better.
