There was a fire in the sky last night. You could see the blaze beyond the trees behind our house. This was scary AF and reminded the Dude and I of the massive fire from a few years ago. Our power was out yesterday from 1:30pm, until about 10:45pm. We took a drive up to the hills, and saw the mass destruction of the blaze, of which the main body has gone south now about 40 miles. It’s devastating. The most incongruous thing we saw was two little kids just jumping away on a trampoline, without a care in the world. If I could have stopped and taken a picture with the fire in the background I would have. . . . .

This is a great reminder since I live next to the largest reservation in Washington State. I already try to be mindful, but it's the little things in language that you don't even realize you're doing that you need to wake up to. As for the sports teams, I've thought they needed to be changed a long time ago. I have so many people call me and ask if I make tipis. I am certainly capable of making them, sure, but I feel it's totally disrespectful of the culture for me to do that. So I always say no. Reposted from @chayladay A few years ago, I removed three kinds of language from my vocabulary. 1. I stopped saying “hey guys” when women were present, stopped calling women girls, and paid extra attention to people’s pronouns. 2. I stopped using vocabulary that undermined mental health issues, eliminating words such as crazy, insane, nuts. 3. I stopped saying “I’ve finally found my tribe” or following the trend to call something my “spirit animal.” Was it hard to make these changes? No. It wasn’t hard. Above is a helpful guide for removing language that is anti-indigenous. I recommend educating yourself on gender and mental health language too. And I’m going to continue to comb through my vocabulary to make sure I’m not using other problematic language. “Words, words words,” as Shakespeare said. They really do matter. From our drive in the hills last night. You can see a small portion of the mass devastation. About 1/4 of a mile from where I took this photo is where the kids were playing nonchalantly. . . . . . . #ColdSprings-PearlHillFire #fireseason #September2020 #OkanoganWashington (at Okanogan, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/CE4kju_gueB/?igshid=1k2d09ai307cp

Flooding of Legion Park where our farmer's Market is usually set up on Saturdays. This is the worst flooding there's been in 40 years they say, and it's only supposed to get worse in the next week or so. #JFC #OkanoganFlood2018 #legionpark #OkanoganValleyFarmersMarket #OkanoganWashington (at Okanogan, Washington)
