Yesterday I posted some pictures of bricks from industrial remains in Ouseburn. Including this one from Snowball and Son Fire Brick company. I've rotated the picture here. Mr Snowball also owned collierys and opened a department store in Gateshead in 1850 that was known as the "Harrods of the North." Someone commented, "I found bricks like that too." Which would be quite a dull comment. I'd think, "So what?" Except he found them in his home city of Vladivostok. I was a little amazed. His photo of a Walbottle Brickworks brick is great. You can get buses from Byker to Walbottle. The site, including the quarry, is now a nature reserve. I might have gone there today had the weather been more promising. Another day. Anyway. Why are our local bricks in Vladivostok? Was there a railway reason for exporting them so far? I know that the Trans Siberian Express ran until 1916 to each side of Lake Baikal and the ships connecting the lines were built by a Newcastle firm. But that's still a way from Vladivostok. And ships aren't made of bricks! I'm fascinated by our local bricks being used so far away.
