Olive has never been comfortable with the idea of control. It’s something she’s always maintained the illusion of: making sure no one around her knew her problems, everything was fine, she was always okay when asked, her tears went unseen and her sobs unheard. And yet she’s spent her entire life watching her twin, her other half, fly out of control. It has never been apparent to her if he’s so chaotic by choice or by nature, but either way it has changed her and shaped her in a way she can never forgive. That’s not to say that she doesn’t love Jace, because she does, of course she does. He’s her twin brother, they grew up together, he’s a part of her that no one will ever understand. And yet every time they’re in the same room she wants nothing more than to scream at him and aggressively question his life choices.
Having seen Jace defy their parents and every single authority they ever encountered, Olive learned how to fly under the radar, how to work the system to get what she wanted. Her parents adored her for her good grades and gave her leeway with her social life as a result. Teachers always admired her spirit and good attitude, so few lost points were always recovered with favor and a nice smile. She’s not manipulative, she’s just observant. But that doesn’t mean that Olive isn’t without problems or struggles of her own. Olive suffers from an anxiety disorder that comes with it’s own set of problems and obstacles, none of which she has shied away from in any way. Diagnosed just before they came to Millard, Olive finally had a name for what she assumed everyone around her felt as well. She had spent most of her life having panic attacks and constant anxiety and assuming that everyone around her also had but dealt with much better than her. Finally having a name for this part of her and finally having the tools to deal with it empowered Olive coming into Millard, and gave her the drive to take the school by storm.
When the twins were very young, Olive realized that if she did crazy or wild or funny things, people would pay attention to her. Thus began a life-long love of comedy. It began with her dad showing her SNL and classic comedies like Caddyshack and Ghostbusters. Now it’s her watching every late-night show she can get her hands on, dreaming about the day that she can be on SNL, or even write for it, and graduate to be the first female host of the Tonight Show. The Tonight Show with Olive Evans sounds good, right? She embraces Millard because it’ll help her develop strong performance abilities, as well as provide academics that are second to none. Olive thoroughly enjoys her studies, and knows that she won’t get far without a good education to back her up. She knows what her dream is and knows the steps to take to get there. Now she just has to wait for the right doors to open.
