so today i was walking from work to my friends house (about a twenty minute walk) at around 2:00. since I work as a dance intern, I thought that it would be best to change out of my leotard and spandex before I started walking, so I put on a pair of highwaisted shorts, a black t-shirt, a baggy flannel and converse (keep in mind that it was 85 degrees out) As I was walking, I noticed that a few people would turn their heads and look at me, which i didn’t think much of, until things got a little out of hand. A few cars honked. People whistled. Someone opened up their car window and threw cigarette butts at me while yelling that I was a “slut”. A man started to follow me and was making kissing noises so, naturally, I ducked into a nearby store. Although nothing major happened to me, I was still shocked and upset about how these people were acting. On a summer day at two o’clock in the afternoon, even as a fifteen year old girl, I should not be scared to walk the streets of the fairly wealthy, low-crime rate town that I have lived in my entire life. Yet I was freaking terrified. It’s absolutely ridiculous that most of these things happened to me 1. because I’m a girl and 2. because I was wearing shorts. I can’t even begin to describe how furious I am. People are absolutely disgusting.
