Remember folks that I am an advocate for fandom and fanwork rights.
Recently I came across a flamebaiter that instigated discourse in a small MCYT fandom space. I’ve been in MCYT since 2013, and that particular subfandom is extremely important to me. Not only did this person show hostile behavior to fans still in OMCYT spaces, but they showed hostility to, by account, MCYT fandom as a whole. Please know (this is directed to the audience reading this) that fanwork is an important asset of art autonomy and society, and has existed for a long, loooooonngg time. I have plenty of research that I and others have conducted that prove this. Harassing people for the fact that they make fanwork, even more, what fanfic site they choose to post it on, is hostility to fandom, and I cannot (as a fandom researcher and participant) let people get away with harassing people in the fandom.
Fanwork is made by people of many different ages and genders, with different ethnicities and sexual orientations, and filled with different creativity and intent. People in fandom largely make for the joy of making, and improve every minute the more they make. Stating to an audience that fanwork is “bad” because it is fanwork posted on “insert blank” website, is so much of an anti-fandom statement that I am surprised the individual decided to participate in it or associate with it.
People are entitled to their own opinions, but harassing people for responding with their own perspective to the fact that you just stated “fanwork is bad”; Don’t judge me for replying that I didn’t agree. I said I didn’t agree that “fanwork from blank is bad” and I had given a stable reason; Whether the person chooses to agree or not is up to them, but they chose to then spew some harsh statements to me and my friends. Those harsh statements were the reason they were kicked from the space.
To the folks following my blog; Stay safe out there. Know that there are people around to help and protect your rights to fandom and fanwork. While people can choose and have a right to choose to dislike fanwork, that still doesn’t mean they have the right to harass you for making it or protecting it.
Sincerely, Aowyn.
