Bayard Rustin (March 17, 1912 – August 24, 1987) was a leader in social movements for civil rights, socialism, nonviolence, and gay rights. He worked with A. Philip Randolph on the March on Washington Movement to press for an end to racial discrimination in employment. He organized Freedom Rides, and helped to organize the SCLC to strengthen Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership and teach about nonviolence; he served as an organizer for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. He worked alongside Ella Baker, a co-director of the Crusade for Citizenship, and before the Montgomery bus boycott, he helped organize a group, called "In Friendship," amongst Baker, George Lawrence, Stanley Levison of the American Jewish Congress, and some other labor leaders. "In Friendship" provided material and legal assistance to those being evicted from their tenant farms and households in Clarendon County, Yazoo, and other places. He became the head of the AFL–CIO's A. Philip Randolph Institute, which promoted the integration of formerly all-white unions and promoted the unionization of African Americans. He served on many humanitarian missions, such as aiding refugees from Vietnam and Cambodia. At the time of his death, he was on a humanitarian mission in Haiti. He was a gay man and due to criticism over his sexuality, he acted as an influential adviser behind the scenes to civil-rights leaders. He became a public advocate on behalf of gay causes, speaking at events as an activist and supporter of human rights. He joined other union leaders in aligning with ideological neoconservatism, and President Ronald Reagan praised him. President Barack Obama posthumously awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As a student at Wilberforce, he was active in several campus organizations, including the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was expelled from Wilberforce after organizing a strike and attended Cheyney State Teachers College. Cheyney honored him with a posthumous "Doctor of Humane Letters" degree. Ozzie Newsome Jr. (born March 16, 1956) is a former football tight end for the Cleveland Browns, as well as a former general manager of the Baltimore Ravens. He was inducted into both the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played for the University of Alabama, where he started for all 4 years of his college career. Nicknamed "The Wizard of Oz," he made the College Football All-America Team and assisted the Crimson Tide to a 42 and 6 overall record during his four seasons. In total, he amassed 102 receptions for 2,070 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns. His 20.3 average yards per catch was a Southeastern Conference record for over 20 years. He was named the Alabama Player of the Decade. He was a two-time All-SEC player and named SEC Lineman of the Year by the Birmingham Quarterback Club and the Atlanta Touchdown Club. He was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Brigadier General Charles Young (March 12, 1864 – January 8, 1922) was a soldier born into slavery in Mays Lick, KY. He was the third African-American graduate of the US Military Academy, the first African American US National Park superintendent, the first African American military attaché, the first African American man to achieve the rank of colonel in the Army, and the highest-ranking African American officer in the regular army. He graduated at the top of the class. He then taught for several years in the new African American high school in Ripley. As one of the first African-Americans to attend and graduate from West Point, he faced challenges far beyond his white peers. He experienced extreme racial discrimination from classmates, faculty, and upperclassmen. He was subjected to a disproportionate amount of abuse because of his color. He graduated with his commission as a second lieutenant, the third African American man to do so. He was first assigned to the Tenth Cavalry Regiment. Through a reassignment, he served first with the Ninth Cavalry Regiment. His service of 28 years was chiefly with African American troops—the Ninth Cavalry and the Tenth Cavalry, African American troops nicknamed the "Buffalo Soldiers" since the Indian Wars. He received honors throughout his life. One he was presented with was a citation in appreciation of his performance as Acting Superintendent of Sequoia National Park by The Visalia, California, Board of Trade. He was elected as an honorary member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. He was the second honorary member to be elected to the fraternity. The NAACP awarded him the Spingarn Medal for his achievements in Liberia and the US Army in 1916. In February 2020, Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky posthumously promoted him to honorary Brigadier General in Kentucky; accounts contained no reference to the Kentucky National Guard. Dr. Shaquille Rashaun O'Neal (born March 6, 1972) "Shaq", is a basketball player who is a sports analyst on the Inside the NBA. He is regarded as one of the greatest basketball players and centers of all time. He played for six teams over his 19-year career in the NBA and is a four-time NBA champion. After playing college basketball for the LSU Tigers, he was drafted by the Orlando Magic with the first overall pick. He became one of the best centers in the league, winning Rookie of the Year and leading his team to the NBA Finals. He signed as a free agent with the Los Angeles Lakers. They won three consecutive championships. He was traded to the Miami Heat and his fourth NBA championship. He was traded to the Suns, Cavaliers, and Celtics before retiring. He ranks 8th all-time in points scored, 6th in field goals, 15th in rebounds, and 8th in blocks. He was honored as one of the league's greatest players of all time by being named to the NBA's 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams. He ranks third all-time in field goal percentage. He was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was elected to the FIBA Hall of Fame. He has released four rap albums, with Shaq Diesel, going platinum. Darryl Lynn Hughley (born March 6, 1963) is an actor, political commentator, radio host, author, and stand-up comedian. He is known as the original host ComicView and as one of the "Big Four" comedians in The Original Kings of Comedy. He has been the host of D. L. Hughley Breaks the News, a correspondent for The Jay Leno Show, and a local radio personality and interviewer in New York City. He landed in 9th place on Dancing with the Stars. Hughley was born in Portsmouth, VA, the son of Audrey and Charles Hughley, who was a Delta Air Lines maintenance worker. He is the second of four children. He stayed in Portsmouth for only two months before his family moved, he grew up in South Central Los Angeles. His teen years were troubled as he became a member of the notorious street gang, the Bloods, and was expelled from San Pedro High School. He turned his back on gang life, got his GED, and obtained employment with the Los Angeles Times. He married LaDonna (1986-). They have two daughters and a son. He has discussed his son's Asperger syndrome on several occasions. He appeared in the third season of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as Will's friend Keith Campbell. He wrote, produced, and starred in The Hughleys, based on his real-life experiences living with his African-American family. He released a stand-up comedy album "D.L. Hughley: Notes From The GED Section" and had a short-lived talk show called Weekends at the D.L. He is a member of The Original Kings of Comedy, and had roles on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and Scrubs. He was the host of the BET Awards. He served as a special guest moderator of The View for one day.
