The day was a slow spring morning. The winter’s bitter touch was slowly melting away and the world around them was creating life. It was this shift in the weather that Negan always enjoyed. He wasn't a fan of the cold. He enjoyed the feeling of the sun on his skin, the promise of tomorrow, the small things that made him feel alive. A hope for the future.
The future. The topic of the future was one Negan had a hard time shaking off the past few days. Whenever the topic of the future came up---Carl Grimes was the thing that followed. He couldn’t help but ponder on the words that the other had asked him before the fight against Alexandria, is this what you wanted to be?
He remembered thinking that no one got to pick who they wanted to be anymore. No one got the luxury of being able to decide their future anymore. The world did that for them now, but Negan remembered the answer he was going to give Carl. He was going to tell him no. That this isn’t what he wanted to become. When his wife had died and left him alone he never imagined this would be his world. That he would wake up every day wondering about his worth, the worth of his people, and the future. “Sir.” The arrival of a voice woke Negan from his thoughts. He had been leaning over the rail and looking out at the fence of walkers when one of his men had come to him. Shit, he hadn’t even heard him come over. He glanced over, picking that the tone of his words would betray the subject of his thoughts. “The men found something in the woods---Carl Grimes.”
