Birthday Surprise
He did actually score on her birthday! c: For Marissa.
"James, you're going to be playing later."
"So?" He seemed offended by this statement, as if he couldn't impress or surprise me whilst on the ice. I lifted an eyebrow as I stared at him over my cup of coffee as he drove. Snow drifted past outside, some tiny flakes landing and sticking on the windows. It wasn't coming down heavy, but just barely falling. The powder hardly provided a layer over the browned grass. He turned to meet my gaze for a quick second, and I saw him roll his eyes before he glanced back to the road.
"What, can you score hat tricks on command?" I asked cheekily and took a sip. He let out a noncommittal grunt, turning the wheel with a little extra fervor.
"Well maybe I just won't do anything at all," he muttered irritably. It was my turn to roll my eyes.
I sighed, reaching over to punch his arm, "I'm just teasing, you big baby." He shook his head, but right before I looked away I could see a small smile tugging at the corner of his mouth.

I met him after the game, out of breath from running to see him. His hazel eyes were bright and the expression on his face was rightly smug as I threw my arms around his neck. I could hear the celebratory music blasting from the locker room, despite the closed door.
"I told you." I could feel his breath warm on my ear, and I could feel the dampness lingering on him from his shower. I honestly almost couldn't believe he'd done it after all his pregame boasting.
"I never doubted you!" I exclaimed, pulling away. "Though I didn't think it was gonna be an insane OT winner." He was beaming as he shrugged, leaning back in to kiss me on the cheek.
"Happy birthday."
