From as early as I can remember, I have seen myself as a human before anything. It is a gift and a conviction passed on to me by my parents as soon as I was old enough to ask the question - what am I - Black or White? Before anything you are Human Jamil, and how human you are is what will define you. This always resonated with me. Being African - American and Danish is a blessing of fate that has given me a compassionate edge into understanding both spectres of my roots and culture. It has also given me a genuine love for all HUEmans. Despite the resistance I have met because of my name and the color of my skin I remain resilient and grateful because I come from a lineage of love, strength and power.
