The Symbolism of Sacrifice perceived as Muharram
The Shias, an important sect of the Muslims, see Muharram in varied ways. The Muharram is an important festival of the Muslim. Hazrat Imam Husain, fought in the battle of Karbala. He fought against the forces of evil and Sacrificed his Life to uphold the glory of Islam.
So the first Ten Days of the Month of Muharram are the days of mourning for the Admirers of the Grand-Son of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. They take out processions and pass bare-footed and bare-headed through the Main Streets of their Towns and Villages, weeping and crying " Yaa Hussain! Haha Hussain" at the top of their voice.
Sacrifice and Perseverance are the Symbols of this holy war, fought by the Great Imam and his family. They would attend religious meetings to pay their homage to the Great Imam. And they also set up sabeels of hot or cold drinks, and feed the poor in honor of the Martyrdom of the illustrious son of Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Fatima. They would wear black clothes as a sign of mourning, with the start of the Month of Muharram.

Majalis considered as assemblies would be held every day throughout the first nine days of the celebration, and events related to the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Husain would be narrated by Shia Religious Orators.
On the tenth day of Muharram, a large procession also taken out. They express their sorrows and briefs by inflicting wounds on their own bodies which is practiced to depict symbolically the sufferings of the Islāmic martyrs.
