I once teased a friend who said, in response to my question about what podcasts he listened to, that he listened to a bunch of NPR shows (I was like “Bryan, you don’t listen to podcasts, you listen to public radio.”), but I realized, while I really like our local public radio station (especially for its local political coverage) I had been missing a lot of shows I had grown accustomed to in Utah (their station rebroadcast a ton of Canadian shows - oh, my disappointment when Jian Gomeshi turned out to be an asshole!) and Boston (WBUR makes SO many shows). 

But now I added a few NPR shows I’ve been missing to my Stitcher favorites and one of the things I didn’t realize I missed until I had it again was Charlie Pierce’s commentary segment each week on “Only a Game.”

Howe was a powerful offensive force, and his offense wasn't limited to shooting the puck. He was the embodiment of old-timey hockey, which is perhaps why Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky are among those who've said Howe was the best ever. Maybe they were concerned that if they didn't say that, Howe would track them down and elbow them into submission. Pro hockey is no country for old men, but nobody who valued his teeth told Gordie Howe that. He played for 32 of the winters from 1946 until 1980. At 45 years old he was the most valuable player for the WHA.
