“This is Newsom’s sophomore album, though my one and only, and a birthday gift from a muso friend of mine. It’s really quite different from anything I’d ever heard before, and I love to be challenged or taken in new musical directions. It could be described as indie folk, though I also found the genre ‘progressive folk’ on her Wikipedia entry. Progressive in that it takes the underlying essence of folk songs, that of narrative storytelling, and stretches it, almost to breaking point. . There are only five songs on this album, which vary in length from 7 to 16 minutes, but since they twist and turn in the peculiar manner of a changeling child, it’s difficult to tell where one ends and the other begins. That’s not necessarily a problem, although I find it hard to follow the narrative and (sometimes) musical arc without following the printed lyrics in the extravagantly packaged 30-page booklet. . Ys, pronounced ‘ease’ is the mythical city on the Brittany coast that was swallowed by the sea, and Newsom explores a wide range of myths, children’s stories, fairy tales and literary romance in her complex story-length lyrics. I confess that after a while, I find her high-pitched voice a little grating, but it suits perfectly the subject matter and her harp accompaniment. . There’s a smorgasbord of musical talent on this album, not least from Newsom’s own harp playing herself; produced by Jim O’Rourke with Steve Albini on the mixing desk with orchestral arrangements from Van Dyke Parks. Bill Callahan, her then boyfriend, also appears on backing vocals on Only Skin.” .
