Here’s a headcanon:

Dogman deals with body dysphoria (this is canon in book 6) Petey feels guilt whenever Dogman has a rough day with himself, knowing it is his fault. Lil’ Petey never met Greg and Knight before the explosion, so when Lil’Petey asks what’s wrong, Petey can’t bring himself to tell his kid the truth.
