thinking about- bucky pulled steve out of the potomac, but something went wrong.

the winter soldier self-designated the mission: save steve rogers, and he self-reported Mission Success, right after dragging his body to shore and watching him cough up riverwater. and then he walked away. but he was wrong in his assessment.

he hadn't saved steve.

his first rescue mission, his first self-designated, he fucked it up.

Steve isn't dead. But he's wrong.

It takes longer than Bucky would like to admit for him to find out. He assumes- the lack of news coverage was a good sign. The lack of Captain America was recovery time. As if Steve Rogers ever laid around in bed as long as a doctor told him too. The Winter Soldier, even operating on such outdated information, should've realized that much at least.

Bucky goes to check on Steve, and he proves difficult to find. This is a good thing: his previous SHIELD housing had been easy to bug, easy to attack. He would've been easy to kill. Steve, he assumed, had learned his lesson. This is only half-true: other people had learned the lesson for him.

Steve Rogers is difficult to find because he is living in Natasha Romanoff's guest room. Not staying there, living: he does not leave the guest room. He cannot leave the guest room.

A severe concussion, paired with an estimated five minutes and 30-something seconds drowning, had done damage. Bucky had not considered- He has never had to worry about the after affects of a failed assassination. He has never intended to fail an assassination, and so had not considered there would be consequences.

He had walked away while Steve coughed up riverwater, and now, months later, he thinks he made a mistake.

he steals Steve's medical records.

His motor control is essentially gone. His balance unregulated. His recall of longterm memories damaged. His ability to speak-

Steve Rogers, Bucky suddenly remembers, was an artist. Before everything else, he was delicate with graphite in a way that felt like feathers. Now he can't hold a pencil.

Or a shield.

His assessment was incorrect. His original mission was the success: Captain America was dead. His self-assigned mission was a failure: Steve Rogers was not saved.

I'd love to hear your take on Here, There and Everywhere and I Will. I always felt like these two songs were written about the same muse, capturing the exact same state of mind. . On the surface, they are soft and sweet love songs, but they carry this underlying sorrow and isolation. It sounds like the singer is whispering about a beautiful, impossible dream; he knows it will never become reality, but he just can't help wishing for it. And I have to say, the concept of queer time really stands out to me in these two songs!

I definitely agree that time is HYPER relevant to both songs, howeverrr I interpret them a little bit differently, especially when they’re taken together.
