they're so offended

it's okay Figaro sometimes i want to punch Basilio too (Bartolo intervenes)

a production that's not afraid to occasionally just let the performers stand there because that happens in real life too sometimes (and let's face it it lets us admire the set and costumes)

one of my favorite moments in this staging is at the very end of this act when Susanna runs screaming at Marcellina

Basilio went from music teacher to errand runner

Susanna really keeping this whole place from falling apart

I always feel so bad for her in this scene

this Figaro is just so feisty

the audience is loving Marcellina's expressions

she's so apologetic when she says Bartolo's the dad

honestly the staging of this scene is so great i can't capture it

full-on sulk going on here

they are just the best

Barbarina is so precious

i mean...

i love how this starts out so slow and sad and then turns into a power aria

i love them,

but then she gets all sad bc she remembers how sucky it is that she has to do all this

Antonio's face when he hears about the Count kissing his daughter

But seriously, this production is one of my favorite things in the whole world. I do have 2020 to thank since it passed into my life this year and has been an EXCELLENT coping mechanism - plus we clearly have a lovely tumblr community of fellow fans who appreciate these incredible singers, this stunning production (leaves leaves LEAVES) and of course the brilliance of Pushkin and Tchaikovsky. Such a gift!!!

arguably the greatest comedic bit in all of opera

poor kid (luckily this is about as mean as anyone gets)

love how he raises his hand before he speaks to the Count

Susanna's got this in the bag

I FORGOT HOW FIGARO SLAMS THE DOOR ON BASILIO Basilio yells and Figaro just keeps walking

see look how happy Figaro is that Cherubino gets to stay (or so they think until the other shoe drops)

remember when this number was one of my favorite parts of the opera? (also "pocket Adonis" is such a cute translation)

see? it can be cute

Susanna and Figaro plotting to give him too much aftershave is just mischievous and such an older cousin/uncle/whatever thing to do why can't we have more of those

this is brilliant the servants are moving the furniture to change the scene but it's also insinuating that Figaro and Susanna are moving their stuff into a different room and the Count is pissed

i love her and she's beautiful but i cannot get over that wig

I still think they should get married

however this is still my favorite Susanna/Figaro duo

i mean look at them, their dynamic is impeccable

yesterday one of the kids at work described how his cousins "ambushed" him and made him sit and let them put makeup on him...I asked if he was okay with it and he said "Yeah, it's just a thing girls do...you just let them." made me think of this scene a little

here we go! this is why I can only watch opera on the weekends anymore. it takes me all day.

Susanna's trying to block Figaro from watching the Count read the note

I honestly love her so much (but she STILL doesn't get her aria!)

Basilio is miffed the Count left him out of this one

this is the only part of the opera we should be mad at Figaro. any director who make him mean deserve legos in their shoes.

Figaro thinks he's so clever hiding in a barrel. Marcellina spots him instantly.

even when they think they're not, they're still perfect

she's so pretty this aria is so pretty this set is so pretty

Cherubino comes in whistling

surrounded by people who are mad at you...maybe could have made some better choices

she's smiling and enjoying his attention it's just so sad she's only getting it because he thinks she's Susanna :(

okay so anyway that's a wrap on my favorite production of this opera <3 <3 <3 I think I get a little too hung up on the ones that drive me crazy I forget to appreciate the ones I really love. This one's not as well-known as the Met or Vienna ones or some others and it doesn't have a bunch of big names but everything about it is just so great. The sets, the costumes, the use of the actual garden, the mixture of madcap and subtle humor in the blocking, the way it takes things seriously while still being able to laugh at itself, the amazing acting from the entire cast, the expressions, the voices, the singing!! I love it all so much and i treasure this production dearly. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new Nozze or wanting to watch it for the first time.

Figaro's disbelief at Antonio's supposed logic (also right after this Figaro yells "NEIGH" and the audience loses it)

I love how they film different close-ups of the various instruments

Antonio getting a head start outside during the overture

half this post is just going to be about how frickin adorable these two are

case in point

can't get over their banter

the other servants laugh when Susanna insults Figaro and he makes them leave lol

I love how sweet and expressive they are

honestly one of my favorite arias in opera and he performs it so well

I love how simple and elegant the costumes and sets are

Bartolo's just aghast

Susanna's expressions are the greatest

also: once again noting how i have not seen a single production of this opera where Basilio is not very gay

La Belle Hélène (Paris, 2000) reactions, Act 1

not sure how far I will get after spending several hours on the washer/dryer situation but here goes nothing. I fucking love this opera and this production is just the best.

also let it be known Felicity Lott was one of my first diva crushes

her expressions give me life

Offenbach and Pelly both just know what to do with a spunky little chorus

this guy cracks me up

she’s so adorable

hahahahaa

I love this kid so much and this aria is ridiculous in the best way

I can’t get over how hilarious it is to see Orestes portrayed like this given the way we see him in every other telling ever

having the chorus be a group of tourists is such a silly idea but it works so well with this production

I love this guy also this chorus is just the boppiest bop in the whole opera

this is so ridiculous lol

I love how this one line becomes an entire chorus

omg

this whole chorus and the staging is just the best

no ulterior motives whatsoever

poor guy barely knows what’s going on
