A helpful OPOME chair – highly recommend
We have had the OPOME chair for about a month now and it has restored considerable mobility to my wife. We have used it to travel several miles in the Villages of Florida where she was easily able to maneuver the chair to the tables of two eating establishments and to investigate several shops. The joystick steering is quite intuitive and she is able to pass through openings of our apartment of only about 28 inches. The OPOME chair folds up (watch the front wheels) and requires unlatching when doing so, but when unfolding just pulls apart (manual not clear on this and other details).
Getting into and out of the chair was problematic because the footrest extends forward and the joystick prevents holding onto the right arm rest. This can be overcome by raising the left arm, using the back of the chair for support and sitting on a swivel pad from the left side of the chair --- this sounds complicated but most people may not need a swivel to face forward after sitting down from the left side. In our home (for easy access to the chair) my wife leaves the left arm raised and folded back even while moving. When folded the OPOME chair easily fits into the trunk space of a Prius.
While I require assistance lifting 50 pounds into a trunk (our daughter and son in law drove us to the Villages), both batteries may easily be removed bringing the weight down to 42 pounds (I haven't tried putting that in a trunk yet). A few weeks after receiving the chair the seller sent a spare cushion perhaps in an attempt to elicit a favorable review. While it was a nice gesture, it didn't influence this review at all. The only negative report is that a small 2 inch wheel intended to keep the chair from tipping backward was loose in the original packing box. The end of the bolt holding the wheel in place had sheared off allowing the wheel to fall off during transport. To fix this required less than a dollar and a trip to the local hardware store. The OPOME chair is well engineered and well constructed and except for a minor slip in the inspection department I can recommend it highly.
