Now into the second day of the quieting of all magic, Evangeline needed a new place to think. For ten years, her house had become something of a safe haven, a place the direct opposite of the sprawling mansion she’d grown up in, its close walls and creaking floorboards comforting in their familiarity. Being without magic seemed deserved, and so she’d reckoned with the loss with an even mind, but the loss of her connection to the earth unsettled her more than she thought it would. In her life, the earth had been something that remained untainted by her family and the life they tried to build for her, and now the loss felt... cruel, almost.
Without thought for where she’d walk, Evangeline drove into town and abandoned her truck in the grocery store parking lot, then began to wander, hands in her pockets, head elsewhere as her feet took her where they pleased. Eventually she found herself seated at a wooden public chess table, the figures rough hewn out of two different colors of stone. Silently, she set up the board, taking the darker grey of the two sides for herself, then felt eyes on her. Seaglass eyes lifted to meet the gaze of someone familiar, though the name took a few moments to recall before she offered Violet a weak smile. “Do you play?” she asked, straightening.
Violet pulled her hair from her face and tied it back, wanting to keep it out of the way for the day. She pulled her coat around her before she tucked her hands into her pockets. It was time for her rounds to start, and the first thing she wanted to do was check up on the files for her patients. But as she neared the computer, she saw a young man sitting in front of it, typing away. She just shrugged and walked up, a smile on her face as she recognized him from the IT department. “Oh, is there an issue with the computers today?”

His body ached from being hunched over in a chair all day,Rylan having slaved over a computer while the drone of his teacher's voice rangthrough his ears. Most days Rylan enjoyed his program, but today had not beenone of those days. Rather than designing their own worlds, they had beenexploring the theories of the worlds they were creating. Rylan knew it wasimportant to have background information on the gaming community that heintended to be a part of, but he had still found himself nodding off withoutrealizing. When he had finally emerged from the school building, he was almostblinded by the light. His mother often commented on how he spent far too muchtime indoors, that it was no wonder that he was such a ghastly pale shade, buthis mother never would learn when to keep her mouth shut. Something his fatherseemed to be constantly reminding her to do.
Glancing at his phone, he smacked himself on the side of hishead when a message from Violet reminded him of their plans for that evening. Was his brain really turning to mush at such a rapid rate that the blonde hadslipped from his mind? He didn't think it to be possible, the young man pickingup the pace as he crossed the campus and made his way to his dorm. He wassupposed to meet her at her place nearly twenty minutes ago and Rylan wasobviously frantic when he was being let into her house by her parents. He gavethem both polite smiles and shook her father's hand, they had seemed to taken aliken to him, though he couldn't fathom why. Climbing the stairs, he knocked onViolet's door before he was walking inside, scratching his head as he tried tocome up some explanation that wouldn't sound as pathetic as Rylan knew anywould turn out to be.
"I'm sorry I'm late, class ran late today and I swearmy head is full of-" He paused for a moment, his gaze settling upon herfor the first time since he had entered the room. "Is that my CaptainAmerica shirt?" He couldn't stop the smile that formed upon his lips asthe question escaped him. "I've been looking for that for ages." Helaughed slightly, the tension he had been carrying earlier seeming to evaporatefrom his body. "I'm not going to even ask how many more of my shirts youprobably have in here." Rubbing the back of his neck, it still came as a surpriseto him even at this stage of their relationship when she closed the distancebetween them, her fingers looped through his belt. "It does look better onyou than it does me." And in a second his cheeks were burning with coloras the blonde informed him that it would look even better on her bedroom floor.

They had already worked their way through his collection ofMarvel movies and had moved on in a different direction when it came to theirweekly movie nights. "I didn't know you were into any of this stuff."Rylan shrugged his shoulders as she continued to riffle through the assortmentof horror films he had collected over the years. There were many differentsides to Rylan, many that those that walked in and out of his life would neverknow of. Violet was one of the lucky few that was being given the chance tolearn of pieces of who he was that he didn't share with anyone. She was acceptingof the strange world he found comfort in and she had been there for him throughmany obstacles and gradually he was beginning to feel as if he deserved her.
Having allowed her to pick the film, he shouldn't have beensurprised when she picked the goriest one she could find. Settling down uponhis bed, he flipped on the television and tried to hold his focus while herlips immediately began exploring every inch of exposed skin she could findbefore the opening credits were even finished. This was what normally happened, unless the movie selected was one he really wanted her to see. But that didn'tmean she wasn't eager to play with him the moment the credits rolled onto thescreen. "Violet." He groaned, her lips moving farther down his body."I thought you wanted to watch this?" She only smirked up at himbefore she was pushing him over the edge of ecstasy.
Attempting to catch his breath, he absentmindedly ran hisfingers through her hair while she rested her head in his lap. "And now Iam going to watch." She sounded as smug as always, satisfied with the factthat even after all this time he still moaned out her name in a way that meantsomething. As the movie progressed, it all got gorier to the point where Rylanwas squinting his eyes shut. "How are you not cringing at this?" Heasked, his eyes flickering down towards the blonde when she didn't reply. Itwas only then that he noticed she had dozed off, how she had been able to do soduring the bloodiest scene of the movie was beyond him. "And I'm stillfinding reasons to fall in love with you all over again."

He couldn't be certain how she managed to talk him intothese kinds of things, Rylan not enjoying being dragged from one dress shop tothe next. He walked with his hands in his pockets, his focus low and his mindelsewhere. He was glad she seemed to be having a good time and he couldn't denyliking the view he was presented with what with some of the outfits she choseto put on. She told him she wanted something daring for the next party theywent to, something else she would manage to convince him to attend with her. Itwas never easy keeping up with Violet, it being even more so due to theirbudding relationship being new and raw. The blonde always seemed to be one stepahead of him and at times Rylan was struggling to keep up. But god was heentranced by her.
"I promise this is the last shop." The blondeinformed him, an unexpected sigh of relief escaping him in that moment. Waitingoutside the change rooms, he glanced around his surroundings seeing he was theonly male present in the store. This wasn’t a surprise in saying that even thewalls were pink. He didn't even know places like this existed, garments coveredin lace and leather, not that he hadn't seen some game characters dressed insimilar outfits. Scratching the back of his neck, he was wondering if allboyfriends were obligated to be pulled into this world of frill and skin beforehis attention was being asked for. Hearing her voice from the other side of thecurtain, a light blush crept up the back of his neck as he was asked to helpher with zipping up her dress.
Rylan froze for a moment, looking around nervously before hewas pulling back the curtain and joining her in the confined space. The way shelooked over her shoulder at him with her golden hair spilling down her back hadthe young man swallowing back any words that may have been forming. She couldsee his hesitation and the smug look that crossed her features did not help himwhen it came to trying to ease the material over her skin. His fingers brushedbare flesh and he could have sworn she had taken a few steps back towards him."Won't I get in trouble for being in here?" His voice was naive, hischeeks radiating with heat. She only chuckled before surveying her image in themirror and then asking him to unzip the dress. No one would believe thatinnocent Rylan who knew more about the virtual world than the real world wasactually being drawn out of his shell by a girl with scarlet lips.
♦: Slow dancing.
He couldn't recall everyone being so short when he was inhigh school, but looking around the gym, he felt close to a giant incomparison. Violet had left to dance with her friends, leaving Rylan at theirtable awkwardly trying to avoid eye contact with anyone that looked in hisdirection for a moment too long. He had never really attended any dances duringhis high school career, but this was a part of the experience that Violetdidn't want to miss. And she seemed eager in her ways to experience all of thiswith Rylan by her side. He didn't mind, but that didn't mean he didn't feel outof place. For the majority of the evening he had been pestered with questionsabout college life and what it was like to be allowed to legally drink. He feltold in comparison to all the bright eyed features that were looking at him likea specimen beneath a microscope. Maybe Violet had been trying to spare him amoment when she had been the one to suggest that they all hit the dancefloor.
Glancing at the dance floor, he could see Violet moving tothe rhythm of the music and as he normally did, Rylan found himself wonderinghow he was lucky enough to know her on such an emotional level. He had neverexpected anything to come from helping out an intoxicated girl; never once didhe think someone of her stature would even look at someone like him the way shedid. She told him she always smiled her brightest when she was with him, butRylan could only ask himself why. He had been informed all his life that he wasof nothing special and he was strangely enough okay with flying beneath theradar. But here in Violet's world, that was not so easily done.
When the pace of the music began to slow, his hands werebeing clasped by a much smaller pair and Rylan was being dragged towards thecenter of the room. "I thought you promised that you weren't going to makeme dance?" He asked as he looked down at the blonde in his arms. Loopinghis arms around her waist, he held her close to him, the young man relaxing forthe first time since they had arrived at the dance. "Are you having a goodtime?" Rylan shrugged his shoulders in response to her question, the youngman pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead and he could have sworn he had heardsome of her friends squealing from somewhere in the background. "Would youbelieve me if I told you this is the first school dance I've ever beento?"
♙: Sharing a bed.
"The floor really isn't as uncomfortable as youthink." They had been together for a couple of weeks now, but Violent seemedcontent with the thought of abandoning the idea of taking things slowly. Rylanhad a more traditional view of relationships than the blonde did, the young manknowing what it felt like to really get to know any other on something morethan an intimate level. Violent enjoyed teasing him a little too much and hewas always quick to slip away from her before they could take theirrelationship to the level he was not ready for. This would explain why hewasn’t quick to jump into bed by her side. Rylan had boundaries he had set forhimself, but had neglected to speak of them with her simply because he didn'twant for her to laugh at him. He truly did feel like a child at times.
Sighing quietly to himself, he listened to her voice ofreason, but still, there was an air of hesitation surrounding him. "I'm ablanket hog and I kick in my sleep and I can promise I'm a horrible person tosleep with." Dropping his gaze, the words left his lips in a sudden breathand he knew she was rolling her eyes even if he wasn't looking at her. "Idon't care." Her voice was stern, but there was still a level of softnessthat kissed each word. Sighing in defeat, Rylan slowly lifted himself from hisposition on the floor, easing himself down onto the edge of the bed. The blondelooked at him with an arched brow and without any words, Rylan moved so he waslying next to her. With her head resting against his chest, it was in the darkthat she was asking him what it was he was so afraid of.
He could have said the first answer that came to him, whichwas spiders, but he knew she was asking for something more from him. SlowlyRylan was opening up to her, it was taking time, but he enjoyed the process oftaking things slowly. "I'm afraid of not being enough." His tone waslow, Rylan adjusting the sheets so they draped over their entangled frames andflicked off the lamp on his bedside table. "For both you and myself."Looking up at the ceiling, a slight chill ran through his body as Violet proceededto draw patterns against his chest with the tip of her finger. "You don'thave to say anything, just let me hold you." The blonde seemed pleasedwith what had been said as she moved closer to his body. He felt at ease withher here in his arms and maybe one day he would be able to see that he hadnothing to be afraid of.
