Tuesday, August 21: The Dillinger Escape Plan, “Chinese Whispers”
Option Paralysis found Dillinger Escape Plan on Season of Mist after a successful run with Relapse, but aside from allowing the band greater control over the rights to their music, the label change didn’t really alter the group’s trajectory. “Chinese Whispers” was perhaps a touch less chaotic than usual, but the track was ultimately a natural refinement of DEP’s approach, as it showed Greg Puciato’s continuing growth as a vocalist, fusing the frantic yowling of old with the eccentricities of a Guy Picciotto or Mike Patton, while Ben Weinman’s riffing remained jagged and technical. That the tune may not have felt as forbidding actually had more to do with the world catching up to Dillinger Escape Plan, because their influence was fully apparent by 2010 thanks to the glut of mathcore groups that were alternately more and less accessible than the standard bearers. But “Chinese Whispers” was a DEP song to the bone, and even with all the imitators and followers on the scene, nobody else sounded quite like this.
