“The sky’s about to open up,” Mal warns, and Alina knows that he is right, senses that crackling feeling that always fills the air before a storm strikes. Yet, she hangs back as the others retreat to the caves, waiting even as the first few drops strike the top of her head, holding her hand out to catch them in her palm.
Before long, it’s pouring, and Alina turns her face up into the warm wet droplets. She’ll probably regret this later, when she’s huddled in the caves soaked to the bone, but right now all she can think about is the simple pleasure of standing in the rain. She remembers doing so in the fields around Keramzin, Ana Kuya shouting for her to come inside.
She assumes the others have all long since ducked out of the downpour, until she feels a hand in her own. Alina turns to Mal and smiles, drenched as they both are now. “You could have gone,” she says, but Mal simply looks at her in a way that causes a shiver to snake its way down her spine. He lifts a hand to her face, brushing wet strands of hair out of her eyes, thumb brushing over her cheek.
Then his lips are on hers, so much warmer and more insistent than the rain. Alina gasps softly, fingers curling into the front of Mal’s clothes. She wants to wrap herself up inside this moment and never come out of it. Her kisses are fervent and eager, and she rises up on her toes to deepen them, arms moving around his neck. She would give anything for this to be all that matters in the world. But it’s not.
“Mal...” Alina murmurs, resting her forehead on his, rain still coming down hard overhead. “...we should really get back.”
