Oscar Thoughts 2026

Most awards seasons, I usually have a passionate take, such as Tar is the best movie of 2022 or Killers of the Flower Moon is far superior to Oppenheimer, that creates this burning desire to shout from the rooftops and try to breakthrough all the awards’ buzz and nonsense.

However, in a year where my favorite film of the year, One Battle After Another, might actually win and there’s a lot of excellent performances that were deigned worth of a heavy, golden bald statue, I have to say I feel pretty good about the show and I’m excited to watch what I can of it before I wake up early.

In honor of tonight’s ceremony, I’m bringing back one of my most popular segments, Oscar Thoughts.

We can try to deny it but Paul Thomas Anderson’s wholly prescient takedown of fascism in America is the best movie released in 2025. It’s funny, the action is superb and it features authentic performances. Plus, it’s PTA’s time. You can try to say this is like in 2006 when Scorsese won for The Departed. But, you know what? The Departed is a 5 star classic that has stood the test of time.

Hamnet is an emotional rollercoaster and Jesse Buckley gives the performance of a lifetime but it’s not the best movie of the year. Love Chloe Zhao and I’m happy she bounced back critically after her foray into Marveldom.

Hahahahah. Avatar 3 didn’t get nominated. I didn’t see it because those movies suck but it seems like my take is starting to catch on with the masses.

Ryan Coogler directed his ass off with Sinners but that movie is overrated. If you want to crown it, then crown it but it’s like the 20th best movie I saw last year. If we’re going prestige horror, I prefer Zach Greger’s Weapons. That said. I’d be happy if Michael B Jordan won a Best Actor Oscar for killing it as two distinctive characters. He’s been great and I think he’s due.

And yet, the best performance of the year was Timothee Chalamet in Martin Supremo. Not even close. Case closed. Despite making money at the box office, it seems Timmy’s swagger is starting to make him unintentionally turn heel. As a fellow wrestling fan, I love it but his mouth is going to cost him an Oscar he earned. That has to sting a little. Michael B. Jordan kept his mouth shut and might win gold now.

I love my Dad too much to really connect with Sentimental Value. Hell, I love both my parents. Did it take some therapy? Yes, but I put in that work long before I watched this on a Delta flight over the holidays and realized I should have watched a Superhero or dumb action film. All-in-all, a well made dramatic film with some superb performances but not worthy of Oscar adulation.

What else is nominated. Thinking… Thinking… Thinking…

Bugonia is better than I expected and shows Yorgos really is that guy. Jenn and I saw him at NYFF when we were hoping Pedro Almodovar would walk out. Mike Leigh walked by and no one gave shit and it was pretty surreal. Shout out to my friend Josh who convinced me to see this movie at BAM, which is still a great theater. Stavros Gang (even though his character freaked me out).

Brazilians know how to make great movies and The Secret Agent deserves this late dark horse push it been receiving. Very stylish, incredibly well made and it features a mulilayered, nuanced performance from Wagner Maura.

Heck the haters, F1 deserves this nomination. Frankenstein was so bad that it made me start to question my relationship to Guillermo Del Toro’s work. Which feels weird because he had one of the best Q&A’s I’ve ever seen with Baz Lurhman during the Elvis (2022) awards push. Train Dreams is solid but I’m not one of those people that like Diet-Terence Malick. Having the coach from Remember the Titans narrate made this feel like a Kevin Costner movie. Only it starred Joel Edgarton with a beard.

Takeaways from SAG: Seyfried was never going to hit home here but dang, she's really done. Lawrence, too. Wicked is fucked as well, Odessa got lucky because of the last name bias and Paltrow has no passion rallying behind her. Happy for the Caton nomination. No one from Sentimental Value got in, not even Skarsgard or Fanning. I think Elordi is winning BAFTA, he was nominated for Saltburn and they don't like Skarsgard very much there (in all these years his only nom is for Chernobyl). Frankenstein is gaining momentum and he might challenge for a win on Oscar night

Oscar Thoughts 2025

For the second time in 4 years, I will be watching the Oscars in a hotel room by myself. The last time was 2022 and the slap heard round the world gave the proceedings a charged, chaotic energy that the awards had been missing since Parasite’s win in 2020.

In honor of tonight’s ceremony, I’m bringing back one of my most popular segments, Oscar Thoughts.

1. No amount of counter argument will make me believe that 2024 wasn’t a down year for movies. It’s 100% because of the writer’s and actors’ strikes that crippled the industry in 2023 and frankly, we’re still feeling the effects of stateside.

2. Dune II was the best movie of last year and it was never taken seriously as a contender. Therefore, I’m not taking this year’s show seriously. Will I watch? Yes, I want to see how it all shakes out but when the best movie of the year isn’t in serious contention, mentally, I’m out.

3. If Anora wins, I’ll have friends who worked on back to back Best Picture winners and I believe it will be the first Oscar movie to have multiple scenes of nude twerking.

4. By January 1st, I’m pretty much done watching screeners and ready to move on to Dumpuary gold like Den of Thieves: Pantera. 2025 has proven to be no different as I never sat down for 7 hours and watched The Brutalist. Sorry, Brady. I’ve worked with you on The Crowded Room and met you on a commercial for Josh Mond and the borderline crew years ago. You’re a great director and I’m happy you have a legit chance to win an Oscar.

5. Regardless of all the terrible tweets the lead actress of Emilia Perez sent, that was a daring, exciting musical soap opera that could have been 5 stars without some of the questionable song choices. Please give Zoe Saldana the Oscar she deserves.

6. Though I haven’t seen I’m Still Here, are we really trying to say Demi Moore’s performance in The Substance was better than Mikey Madison? Really? Cue up the Tim Robinson meme please. That said, I was rooting for Demi because of her amazing career arc and I really enjoyed The Substance but an Anora rewatch forced me to re-evaluate Madison’s work and she gave the best performance of 2024.

7. No Best Supporting nod for Denzel for Gladiator 2? Yes, the CGI animals are ridiculous and the movie never quite gels like fans of the original wanted it to but Denzel carries that movie and is exceptional in it.

8. Even with that notoriously bad ending, Conclave deserves Best Screenplay. That or September 5, which probably isn’t nominated (checking… it is nominated!). Okay, now having checked the nominations, Conclave deserves Best Adapted Screenplay and September 5th Best Original Screenplay.

9. Though I didn’t love the overall film, Nosferatu deserves a lot of the below the line and technical awards. Cinematography, Production and Costume Design, as well as Makeup and Hair. Even a hater like me sees the incredible craftsmanship of Nosferatu.

10. Speed Round: Nickel Boys is overrated (the POV style choice was incredibly distracting), Wicked was good big budget spectacle but not an Oscar movie, Timothee Chalamet comparing himself to Michael Jordan was laughable when we all know he’s more of a Steph Curry, Sing Sing was the most emotionally stirring film and has received no real attention - what the hell? And, in closing, I’ll never watch The Apprentice because I’m done supporting Donald Trump content. Because, well, fuck that guy and fuck you too. Thanks!

Oscar Thoughts 2023

I'm bringing back my popular segment, Oscar Thoughts, mainly because I thought the Oscars were this past Sunday and they were not. Now, I have one more week to not watch any more movies from 2022. I'll just say it, it's March 2023 and I've moved on from 2022. I'm not out here wondering what the Best International movie is anymore. They could have sent screeners. Instead I watched Decision to Leave and moved on. Today, I'm discussing my rankings of the 2023 Best Picture Nominees. One thing to be clear about is my personal taste doesn't really align with a lot of other filmmakers. I like it when the movie is good and that's my main concern when I watch a film. 1. Tar - ****1/2 I love this movie and I'm surprised it never captured the Zeitgeist. There's nothing easy or straightforward about its approach to cancel culture and I think that's tough for some people. I love films about flawed geniuses (see The Social Network and Steve Jobs) and I appreciated the comedy and psychological thriller aspects more the second viewing. 2. Elvis - ****1/2 Because I know how much many people hate this movie, I have kept kind of mum on it but I really enjoyed Baz Luhrman's 'Elvis'. It felt like he finally had the material to match the incredible production design and bombastic, dizzying camera movement and constant cutting that has been his style since 1996's Romeo + Juliet (a junior classic for me). There's no defense for Tom Hanks' performance in Elvis but it's Austin Butler's world and everyone else is just getting by. A truly electric, hypnotic performance that could win an Oscar but could also lose to B. Fraser (whale gang) or Colin Farrell (still owed for his work in 2006's Miami Vice). 3. All Quiet on the Western Front - ****1/2 An instant modern war film classic that's score is still blaring in my brain. 4. Top Gun: Maverick - ****1/2 Recognizing the achievement that is Top Gun: Maverick is hard for some people because they don't view it as an Oscar movie. To them, I say what the fuck is going on with Avatar 2 then? Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski, Chris Macquarrie and Jerry Bruckheimer nail the landing with the sequel that ties up all the loose ends and raises the bar on aviation filmmaking. Are you not entertained? 5. Women Talking - **** Superbly acted film from one of my favorite actors from my youth, Sarah Polley (The Sweet Hereafter). I wanted to enjoy this movie more but it's a tough subject matter and it's mainly desaturated, washed out images of people talking in a barn. 6. The Banshees of Inisherin - **** To be clear, I enjoyed Banshees overall and found it funny, which is still the main goal of comedies. I've never seen In Bruges but I can't say I've ever been a Martin McDonagh fan. He's always ready to beat you over the head with symbolism and in this film, he ponders what creators owe fans and what it means to be an artist through the backdrop of an Irish isle during Civil War. Exceptional performances by everyone involved. It's just not one of my favorite films of the year. 7. The Fabelmans - ***1/2 I'm not here to throw shots at the King (Spielberg). He's made another technically brilliant film examining his own backstory in heartbreaking detail. My biggest issue with this film and other Spielberg works is I have very different sensibilities and attitudes toward the American Dream. I hated high school and I didn't care what anyone thought about me and I handled my parents divorce much differently. Spoilers: Young Steve, you broke the code (IYKYK). 8. Triangle of Sadness *** If you always wanted to know what a European version of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" would be, then here is your chance. I enjoyed director Ruben Ostlund's Force Majeure but TOS is a lot more overtly disgusting. It's not until the final act, which is basically a 5 star movie in itself, that I connected with the material. 9. Everything Everywhere All at Once *** When this movie wins Best Picture, it will become the first winner that I'll have walked out on in theaters (don't worry, I went back the next day and nearly walked out again but then bought two beers and just accepted that I wasn't into the film but it deserved to be finished). Here is my LB review that I've never wavered from "There’s a lot of 5 star moments in this movie and a lot of 1/2 star moments. I was exhilarated and also bored. The comedic moments often didn’t work for me. Daniel’s, I get it, you’re into butt stuff. I’m going to give this movie three stars because it’s not really for me but I’m glad I saw it and I’m even more happy to know movies like this can still get made. That said, I never need to see this movie again." 10. Avatar: The Way of Water - *1/2 SPOILERS: James Cameron starts the movie with the bad guys that are killed off in the first movie just being brought back into the Avatar world and basically tells the audience, I'm going to run it back and you're going to lap up these animated visuals like the little puppies you are. I was immediately out on this movie and wanted to walk out but instead went to concessions, bough two IPA's (it was in Texas and yes, there's a pattern here) and went back and watched the Swiss Family Cameron whaling adventure. Cool.

Presenting my first official Oscar Thought for the 95th academy awards

Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick Boom is my personal pick for best actor this year, however I still think the category is a two horse race between Will Smith and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Will Smith has been seen as the frontrunner all year, and now with Leo, Peter Dinklage, Joaquin Phoenix and Adam Driver pretty much out of the discussion, that position has definitely been solidified. He has the biopic advantage, and considering his career trajectory, this will probably be the last chance the academy gets to reward him. I do think Will Smith's career deserves to be rewarded, but I don't know if an Oscar is the way to do it.

Benedict Cumberbatch is giving the better performance of the two by far, but it isn't a very oscar friendly role. The best comparison I can make is Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, who's win in this category as seen as one of the times the academy unexpectedly got it Right. He also has the advantage of being in film that is most likely going to be a big winner, it's the current frontrunner for Director and Screenplay. My current prediction is he will take home the award.

But now I want to talk about why Andrew Garfield shouldn't be left out of the discussion. Many film critics and oscar experts have been making clickbait articles on why Spiderman No Way Home could sneak into the tenth best picture slot that's currently up for grabs. Most Oscar fanatics see this as a laughable claim. My take? With the ratings dip the Oscars have been experiencing, it's definitely a possibility that the tenth slot would be used for its original purpose, getting popular films in the best picture category. If No Way Home performs in other categories, such as vfx, sound and editing, its definitely possible. IF the oscar voters have that much goodwill towards No Way Home, its definitely possible they will take into account Andrew Garfield's standout performance in the film, along with his brilliant work in Tick Tick Boom when voting time comes. However, Andrew Garfield is a fantastic young actor with a long fantastic career ahead of him, and will probably lose the award because there will absolutely be other chances to reward his work.
