Oscar Party Weekend - 1973 Oscars Poster
My brother has been throwing an Oscar Viewing Party for longer than I can remember (at least since the early 90s when he moved to Chicago), either at his home, or at his restaurant. Since 2005 I have been gifting him with a large Oscar poster of that year’s nominees.
Me and my little brother Tom first watched the entire Oscar broadcast back in 1973 (I was 11 and he was 9). We had just seen ‘The Poseidon Adventure’ and were excited to see one of the actresses nominated, and several special effects awards and somehow managed to win “Best Song” that year for “There’s Got to Be a Morning After”. Every year afterwards, we would watch the awards together, and even when we moved away from home, we would still call long distance to compare notes during or after the show.
In 2019, I went on a binge after drawing the current year’s poster, and went on to draw three ‘backdated’ posters for our formative years of Oscar Watching. This is the poster for 1973 (honoring films from 1972), including Cabaret, The Godfather, Sleuth, Deliverance, Sounder, Lady Sings the Blues, The Heartbreak Kid, Fat City, The Poseidon Adventure, The Ruling Class, Pete ‘n Tillie, Butterflies are Free and Travels With My Aunt.
