You know why my DO acceptance bothers me? Because of everyone’s ignorant stigma. It truly drives me up a wall to deal with and I haven’t even started school yet. I had an interview at my local MD school today and my /friend/ just goes “at least it’ll be an MD!”. Hell...a PA who really should know better asked me “will you be going to medical school or DO school?” And I was bewildered by how purely ignorant this comment was. Medical school is hard to get into and getting in as an accomplishment. Period. MD or DO. To have people constantly undermine this accomplishment because I’m planning the DO route is an extremely frustrating thing.

Med school Check In

Wow, so its been a while... just shows how busy I really became. Lol when I had free time it wasn’t spent on tumblr but now that I am on a longer break I wanted to reflect on the end of my last semester.

What we’ve been up to

So the second block of school was said to be the “hardest block of medical school” but I am happy to say I’ve made it through. During our second block, we had physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and anatomy for lecture courses.

In anatomy lab, we were dissecting all of the gut. Esophagus —> Rectum and the abdominal cavity.

In OMM, we learned about doing muscle energy to the ribs, some Chapman’s points, facial effleurage and cervical/thoracic counterstrain.

In clinical skills, we learned how to go through all the physical exams. For example, neuro exam, MSK exam, cardipulmonary exam etc. We don’t know these 100% but I believe our school just wanted us to learn a baseline. For example we know the steps of an eye exam and how to hold an otoscope and position ourselves on the patient but don’t know what we are looking for in the eye yet.

I’m pretty happy. I know that I am exactly where I’m suppose to be. This last block was very challenging and I wouldn’t have been able to make it through it’s crazy final week without my group of friends and friendly classmates helping each other through and from this we are closer than ever. We often have to remind each other that we’ve only known each other for about 4 months!! Lol

How I can improve

So for a while last block I was using these print out time sheets to keep my study habits on track - for 2018, I bought a passion planner and I am super excited to use it!! The organizational nerd in me is ecstatic.

Also I am going to try to stop leaving studying for OMM for last minute. A lot of times lecture and anatomy lab take up a large bulk of your studies so I am going to improve on integrating OMM into my weekly study more instead of cramming that.

Big goals

My big goals for this coming block and year are to start becoming involved with a research project I’m actually interested in ( public health, patient realtions, free patient clinic research) and also try to start brainstorming my future non-profit that I want to create sooner than later.

I am enjoying my last week of winter break before school starts up again.
