Osvalde Lewat's The Aquatics is proof in novel form that "write what you know" is important advice because it's possible to learn about interesting and important stuff. Lewat has done multiple award winning documentaries about injustice and violence in Cameroon and elsewhere, then photography, THEN wrote a fierce domestic tragicomedy about a woman choosing between her husband and her [illegally] gay best friend in a fictionalized African country.
Probably Lewat just had mad talent for prose and language before writing anything, but that's a lot less certain to me her filmmaking career just being good preparation for FIRE prose, dialogue, and humor.
